Nigeria approves N70,000 monthly transport aid for workers for six months

The Federal Government has approved a N70,000 monthly transport intervention for public service workers at all levels for six months, starting in November 2026, to ease the impact of rising living costs.

The decision was among resolutions reached at a conciliation meeting between the government and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Abuja on Tuesday.

The meeting followed renewed pressure from organised labour over the cost of living, workers’ welfare and outstanding agreements. It was convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and chaired by Labour Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, with NLC President Joe Ajaero leading the labour side.

According to the resolutions document, “transport intervention of Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000) commencing from November 2026 would be paid across all levels for a period of six months.”

The government also approved the payment of peculiar allowance arrears with effect from May 1, 2026. The arrears will be settled in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.

However, the parties failed to agree on the effective date for implementing the national minimum wage. They did agree that the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee would be constituted and begin meetings immediately.

The resolutions also covered other issues including health workers’ remuneration, tax relief and hazard allowances for agricultural officers. Both sides are expected to reconvene in one month to review progress on implementation.
