I’m not related to Senator Ike Ekweremadu. Apart from the few occasions, I saw his pictures on papers and his videos on televisions; I wouldn’t know what Ekweremadu looks like in real life. In fact, I may not be able to recognize Ekweremadu if I meet him tomorrow on the road. So, when I write about the situation the Ekweremadus found themselves lately it is not because we are friends or related but because I feel their pain and wish that things get better for them.
The news that Sonia Ekweremadu needs a kidney transplant is widespread. Recently, she took to her Instagram to solicit the help of Nigerians narrating her deplorable health situation. She explained that the pathetic kidney condition she was going through was genetic which explained why it was difficulty for any member of her family to donate for her the kidney she desperately needed.
Sonia undergoes series of dialysis weekly. Apart from the financial implications involved in the process, the pain she experiences is not what words can describe.
It is also a known fact that Sonia’s father, Senator Ekweremadu is in police custody following the complications that arose while he was seeking solution to his daughter’s health challenges. This is really a turbulent time for the Ekweremadus and any one with human heart will certainly feel their pains.
It is therefore very unfortunate that some people are insensitive to the situation of Sonia’s life and the predicament of her family. Some comments I read online in relation to Sonia’s predicament are appalling. There are situations that shouldn’t be used to score cheap political goals or to express vengeful feelings. Yes, Ekweremadu is a Nigerian politician and Nigerian politicians are not liked but what has that got to do with a young lady who struggling for her life? Where is our humanity? Where is our African love and value for human life?
Sonia could be anyone’s daughter or sister for God’s sake! It is intangible whose daughter she is at this point. It is not a time to talk politics or to think God is punishing the Ekweremadus for the sins of their father. It is time to show humanity through love.
Why would some people be discouraging those who are volunteering or expressing interest to donate kidney for Sonia? I don’t understand! Is it your kidney? If you are not ready to donate yours, why make comments that could discourage others. This is the height of man’s inhumanity to man! If Sonia dies for not finding a done, will you eat her corpse?
Please, if you have no kidney to donate to Sonia, encourage those who have voluntarily indicated interest to do so or keep quiet if you feel that Ekweremadu’s sins are so unforgivable. I feel that discouraging anyone who wants to help in this situation is tantamount to murder. Don’t be a murderer!
