On Wednesday night, the UEFA Champions League’s Gameweek 5 matches came to an end, and a few Nigerian players had mixed results.
Raphael Onyedika, a fellow international colleague of the Super Eagles, lost to Porto’s fullback as Club Brugge was defeated 4-0 in Belgium.
Onyedika suffered his first loss in the competition with Brugge after having a strong performance in their first four games. Before the game on Wednesday, the Belgian champions had already advanced to the competition’s knockout phase.
The convincing win also handed Porto their knockout round ticket at the expense of Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
At the San Siro, Nigerian forward Fortune Bassey was in the starting lineup for Viktoria Plzen in their 4-0 tumbling to Inter Milan.
Bassey was subbed off at halftime as goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Edin Dzeko (brace), and Romelu Lukaku saw off the Czech champions.
Inter’s win sealed the Serie A side’s passage to the round of 16 ahead of Barcelona.
In the Netherlands, Calvin Bassey featured from start to finish, but his effort was not enough to stop Liverpool from running out 3-0 winners over Ajax Amsterdam.
With the defeat, Ajax are out of the Champions League but are in a good position to beat Glasgow Rangers to the Europa League ticket.
At the Diego Maradona Stadium, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen was an unused substitute in Napoli’s 3-0 thrashing of Glasgow Rangers.
Giovanni Simeone’s first-half brace and Leo Ostigard’s strike after the break were all Napoli needed to outclass the Scottish giants.
