Singer Davido has said Senate President Godswill Akpabio and billionaire Aliko Dangote telephoned him during the Osun State governorship election, pressing him to delete critical social media posts, a request he refused until official results were announced.
Speaking in an interview on News Central Television, the Afrobeats star, whose full name is David Adeleke, said he had also heard that Akpabio attempted to contact the collation centre.
“I heard that the Senate President was trying to call the coalition center. He also called me to delete tweet. I refused. Dangote also called. I said I won’t delete till INEC declares my uncle as winner,” Davido stated.
He described the calls as coming at a time when he was monitoring results and highlighting delays on the platform X. “They were calling me to delete. I said sorry o. You guys have literally just gone against my uncle… I can’t delete anything,” he added, referring to Akpabio. Of the businessman’s approach he said: “Uncle Aliko called me too. I said, ‘Uncle, I’m not deleting until the INEC announcement.’”
Davido, who actively supported his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, further claimed large sums of money were deployed in an attempt to influence the poll. He insisted his family’s camp spent nothing on election day and relied on public vigilance.
“We didn’t spend a dime on election day,” he said. Adeleke was later declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Neither Akpabio nor Dangote had publicly responded to the claims by late Tuesday.
