Anambra State Sports Development Commission, in collaboration with the Anambra State Volleyball Association, has organized a 10-day referee and coaching course.
Angel Network News (ANN) gathered that
the training is taking place at Archbishop A.K Obieduna Retreat Center in Nodu Okpuno, Awka.
The program kicked off with a referee course and has now entered its concluding part with the coaching course scheduled to run until October 4, 2024.
The initiative has drawn participants from across Nigeria, including states such as Maiduguri, Minna, Abuja, Edo, Gombe, and Ogun. However, Chief Jerry Onyemachi, the South East volleyball coordinator, expressed disappointment at the low turnout from the region.
Some of the participants while speaking, revealed that the reluctance of the South East to engage actively in sports programs contributes to the region’s diminishing influence in national sporting circles.
They expressed optimism that the training will strengthen the presence of volleyball in Anambra and the wider South East.
The coaches extended there gratitude to the Anambra State Volleyball Association and Governor Chukwuma Soludo for their support in making the event possible.
Special mention was given to Soviyor Samuel Timothy, the National Chairman of the Volleyball Referee Association, for his efforts in training the participants, especially in beach volleyball.
The Chairman of the Anambra Sports Development Commission, Patrick Estate Onyedum, praised the professionalism of the international referees who have been instrumental in the training.
Onyedum reiterated Governor Soludo’s commitment to developing sports in the state, noting that the administration is keen on nurturing future sports icons through sustained investment in training and sports infrastructure.
Speaking on the program, Soviyor Samuel Timothy expressed his satisfaction with the facilities and the enthusiasm of the participants. He commended Anambra State for its efforts to host the course, stating that the state is now making strides toward having a pool of qualified volleyball referees.
As the training nears its conclusion, Timothy encouraged participants to focus on their passion for the game rather than immediate financial gain, assuring them that dedication would bring success in the long term.
He also extended an invitation to the participants to officiate at a volleyball championship in Abia State on October 10th, further motivating them to grow their careers in officiating and coaching.
