French midfielder Paul Pogba has left AS Monaco after the Ligue 1 club terminated his contract following one season in which he made only limited appearances.
The 33-year-old, a 2018 World Cup winner with France, had signed a deal running until June 2027. Monaco said the agreement was ended early after objectives set by both parties were only “partially achieved.”
Pogba featured in six matches last season, starting just one and appearing as a substitute in the remaining five. His time at the club was hampered by difficulties regaining peak form after a doping suspension and repeated injury problems.
“Representing this club and the principality was an incredible experience,” Pogba said. “AS Monaco is an incredible club and although I did not play as many games as I had hoped, I will always be grateful for the opportunity to wear their colours.”
Pogba joined Monaco last summer after the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced a four-year doping ban imposed while he was at Juventus to 18 months, allowing him to resume professional football in March 2025. He has maintained the ban stemmed from a mistake.
Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro described the signing as a major, ambitious challenge. “While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, it should not overshadow the enthusiasm that surrounded his return to club football, nor the fact that Paul was able to return to the pitch and to professional football during this period,” Scuro said. “We wish Paul all the very best for the future.”
