Nigerian Lady offers to donate kidney to Ekweremadu’s daughter

Hours after 25-year-old ailing daughter of former deputy Senate speaker, Ike Ekweremadu, Sonia, took to social media to appeal to the public to save her from the life-threatening battle with kidney disease, a lady, Annastasia Olamma, 24, has offered to donate her kidney.

On Monday, Sonia in a statement posted on her Instagram handle @soniaekw, narrated her ordeal since 2019 when she was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease, FSGS Nephrotic Syndrome and what her family has passed and still passing through.

Her appeal read in part: “My family has battled to save my life and has taken me to various hospitals, but the illness persisted and kept degenerating. I am alive today by the special grace of God. I am presently in London, UK, receiving five hours of dialysis 3-4 times a week. This is at the expense of my family as I am not qualified for NHS due to my immigration status.

“The last three years have been extremely challenging. The charges being faced by my parents in London presently are directly connected to my illness and have complicated matter for me and my family. I do not intend to delve into details of this unfortunate development as the matter is still in Court. I am however optimistic that the truth will prevail and it will end in praise to God.

“In the circumstance above, I am appealing to anybody whom it may please to assist me willingly with a kidney donation in the name of God.

“This appeal would have been utterly unnecessary as every member of my family is eager to donate their kidney to me, knowing that I would do the same for any of them. Regrettably, comprehensive medical examination showed that my case of nephrotic syndrome is a genetic illness and the doctors advised against donation from any of my family members, as it would likely reoccur. In the time that my father has been incarcerated, he has been diagnosed with acute kidney damage.

“Anybody that is moved by this appeal and wishes to donate his or her kidney to me may send an email to helpsonialive@gmail.com and include his or her name, phone number, email address and place of residence.

“Please, note that under the laws of England and Wales, organ donation must be purely driven by compassion and therefore no reward is involved. Finally, I have decided to commit and dedicate myself to helping people with the challenges of kidney disease, upon my full recovery.”

Responding on her Facebook page,  Olamma said her kidney was healthy, adding that she had sent a message conveying her resolve to donate it to Sonia.

“I want to donate one of my Kidney to Sonia Ekweremadu to save her life. I have made up my mind to do this to prove women can help women,” she wrote on Facebook.

“If any of her relatives mum, dad, and siblings, cannot give out their kidneys to save their Bloodline then I will donate my own to save Sonia And I demand nothing in return. I pray it matches with her own.

“I’m 24 years old, I don’t take alcohol and  I believe my kidney is very healthy to donate.

“I have sent a message to her email @helpsonialive@gmail.com and anticipate her reply.”

Ekweremadu and his accountant wife, Beatrice, 55, were arrested by the Metropolitan Police on June 21, at Heathrow Airport, after arriving on a flight from Turkey. They are standing trial at the Central Criminal Court, London, for alleged organ harvesting.

While senator Ike was charged with conspiracy to arrange or facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting, Beatrice was charged with arranging or facilitating the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, between August 1 last year and May 5, under the Modern Slavery Act 2015.

Meanwhile, the former deputy Senate president has asked the Abuja division of the Federal High Court to dismiss a suit by the alleged organ harvest victim, Ukpo, seeking to stop the release of his bio-data to a London court.

In a counter-affidavit against the suit, Ekweremadu told the court that Ukpo has no basis to entertain any fear in the release of his visa application information and his bank account opening package except he had lied on his real age.

The counter-affidavit deposed to by his younger brother,  Bright Ekweremadu, the detained senator denied the allegations that he demanded for Ukpo’s bio-data.

Rather, the deponent averred that what the Federal High Court ordered to be released to the London court was Ukpo’s bank account opening package and the information supplied in his visa application request.

At any rate, Ekweremadu revealed that based on July 1, 2022 order of the court, the required documents have since been transmitted to two different courts in the United Kingdom.

The senator averred that it is too late in the day for Ukpo to seek reversal of a valid order that had been executed to determine his real age only.

He, therefore, prayed the court to dismiss the suit for being frivolous, abuse of court and lacking in merit having been overtaken by event.

At yesterday’s proceedings, Ukpo’s lawyer, Ojonugwa Oguche, prayed the court to adjourn the matter for him to react to the counter affidavit.

The request was granted and the matter fixed for September 20 for hearing by Justice Inyang Ekwo. Ekweremadu was represented by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Eyitayo Fatigun.

Ukpo, the victim of the alleged organ harvesting scandal involving Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, had on August 30 asked the court o set aside its July 1 order for the release of his bio-data for use in a London court in Ekweremadu’s trial.

Ukpo had, while faulting proceedings of the court that led to the issuance of the order, claimed his fundamental rights to  fair hearing and personal privacy had been grossly breached.

His grouse was that neither he nor the attorney general of the federation (AGF), as chief law officer of the federation, was made a party in the suit.

The application for release of bank account opening package was argued by Adegboyega Awomolo and granted by Justice Ekwo, prompting the AGF to transmit the records to the London court in compliance with order of the Nigerian court.
