# The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Chapter, has congratulated the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP. Ikioye Orutugu, on his promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, describing the elevation as well-deserved and a recognition of his exemplary service.
In a congratulatory message signed by the Chairperson of the association, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, NAWOJ said the promotion is a testament to Mr. Orutugu’s professionalism, exemplary leadership, dedication to duty, and unwavering commitment to excellence in policing and public service.
The association noted that the promotion reflects his years of distinguished service in the Nigeria Police Force and expressed confidence in his ability to excel in his new responsibilities.
NAWOJ Anambra prayed that God would grant the newly promoted AIG greater wisdom, strength, and success as he assumes his new office, expressing hope that his tenure would be marked by integrity, outstanding service, and greater accomplishments for the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.
The association also commended Mr. Orutugu for his steadfast commitment to justice, peace, and the protection of lives and property, wishing him a successful and impactful tenure as Assistant Inspector General of Police.
# The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has officially commenced the implementation of a 1.7MWh Mini-Grid Solar Power Project at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State.
The TETFund delegation, led by the Director of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Engr. Joseph Odo announced the commencement of the project during the official site handover ceremony at the institution.
He introduced Trade and Tech International Limited as the contractor responsible for executing the project, while the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr Chioma Irene Awuzie, formally handed over the project site to the contractors for immediate commencement of work.
The project, which is expected to be completed within six months, is designed to provide renewable, sustainable, and cost-effective energy for critical academic and administrative operations within the institution.
# The Abubor Progressive Union (APU) has congratulated one of its distinguished sons, Chief Priest Nze Obiajulu Udoye Isiana Nnewi, on his successful coronation into the prestigious Ọzọ Nnewi Society.
In a statement, the President of the Union, Hon. Azubuike Uchedife, described the elevation as a remarkable achievement and a reflection of Chief Priest Udoye’s integrity, exemplary character and unwavering commitment to the preservation of Igbo culture and tradition.
According to the union, his acceptance of the revered Ọzọ title demonstrates his dedication to leadership, community service and the cultural values that have continued to define the Nnewi Kingdom.
The statement prayed for God’s continued guidance, wisdom, good health, long life and prosperity as Chief Priest Udoye assumes his new traditional responsibilities.
The union further noted that the coronation is not only a personal accomplishment for the new Ọzọ titleholder but also a source of pride for Abubor Village, the Nnewi community and all those committed to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people.
The APU congratulated Chief Priest Udoye on the honour and wished him a successful and impactful reign in service to his community and the preservation of Nnewi’s cherished traditions.
# The Anambra State Government has arrested a 47-year-old woman, Mrs. Onyinyechi Esther Charles, over allegations of carrying out surgical procedures without the required medical qualifications and licence.
Mrs. Charles, an indigene of Abia State married to a man from Nteje, allegedly operated a traditional birth attendant (TBA) facility in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, where she is accused of performing caesarean sections, conducting normal vaginal deliveries and carrying out other surgical procedures.
The facility has also been linked to reported cases of medical complications and fatalities.
According to the Anambra State Ministry of Health, the arrest followed investigations initiated by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal medical practice and safeguard the lives of residents.
The ministry said the suspect allegedly admitted during interrogation to performing caesarean sections, normal deliveries and other surgical procedures without the necessary qualifications or legal authorisation. It further disclosed that she was previously known as Eze Nwanyi before later becoming a church minister and presenting herself as a surgeon.
During an inspection of the facility on Sunday, July 12, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, accompanied by the Mayor of Anambra East Local Government Area, Hon. Ifeanyi Chinweze, and security personnel, recovered surgical instruments and other medical equipment believed to have been used for the alleged unauthorised procedures.
Hospital beds where patients were reportedly treated were also found within the premises, while officials discovered what they described as a shrine and an altar inside the facility.
The state government said the premises have been confiscated pending the outcome of legal proceedings, while the suspect is expected to be arraigned before a competent court.
Speaking during the inspection, Dr. Obidike described the discovery as disturbing and a serious threat to public health. He said the Soludo administration would not allow unqualified individuals to endanger the lives of residents under the guise of providing healthcare.
He warned members of the public against seeking medical care from unlicensed facilities or unqualified persons, urging expectant mothers and other patients to patronise only government-approved hospitals and duly registered healthcare providers. He added that the Ministry of Health would sustain its surveillance and enforcement operations across the state to identify and prosecute illegal medical practitioners.
The commissioner reiterated that the government remains committed to sanitising the health sector and ensuring that only licensed and qualified healthcare professionals provide medical and surgical services in Anambra State, warning that anyone found violating the law would face the full weight of legal sanctions.
# Ifitedunu Town Union, Dunukofia Local Government Area, Anambra State has hosted all Primary School Pupils in the area to a maiden career seminar.
The event which held at the Civic Centre, Ifitedunu, brought together Government and Privately owned primary school pupils to listen and be tutored on different careers, how to make career choices and to ask questions on what have been bothering them in the career choosing scope.
While declaring the event open, the President General, Ifitedunu who also was the Chairman on the occasion, Professor Stephen Ufearoh, urged parents and guardians to take advantage of the State Government free education policy to bring up their children and wards with no fear.
He said the Ifitedunu Town Union also has been contributing in the upbring of the school children by sponsoring them in the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and the University Matriculation Examinations.
Ufearoh explained that the career talks were designed to catch them young and instill the desire to go to school in the children.
# Experts have advocated a citizen-centred monitoring approach as a critical strategy for improving transparency, accountability and quality of public service delivery in Anambra State, urging monitors to focus on whether government services meet the needs and expectations of citizens.
The call was made at a capacity development programme for members of the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Committee organised under the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme, where the State Service Delivery Transparency Initiative (SSDTI) was introduced as a new framework for strengthening service delivery across public institutions.
Speaking at the event, RoLAC State Coordinator, Dr. Josephine Onah, said the initiative represents a shift from conventional anti-corruption monitoring to a service delivery model that prioritises citizens’ experiences and satisfaction with government services.
According to her, the SSDTI establishes clear service standards for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), backed by multiple layers of oversight to ensure institutions provide quality, transparent and accountable services.
# The Permanent Secretary, Anambra State Ministry of Commerce, Engr. Michael Obiekwe, has urged civil servants to embrace cooperative societies and take advantage of Bank of Industry (BOI) soft loans to expand their businesses, build sustainable wealth, improve their standard of living and contribute to increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the state.*
He spoke at the 2026 International Cooperative Day celebration at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.
Engr. Obiekwe said cooperative societies remain one of the most reliable vehicles for entrepreneurship, financial inclusion and economic empowerment, stressing that workers who belong to vibrant cooperatives stand a better chance of accessing affordable credit, investing in viable enterprises and achieving long-term financial stability.
He urged public servants to maximise government-backed financing opportunities to strengthen their economic future.*
The Permanent Secretary also commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s ongoing reforms in the cooperative sector, saying the revalidation, digitisation and institutional restructuring of cooperative societies would enhance transparency, improve accountability, attract intervention funds and development financing, and reposition cooperatives as strategic partners in Anambra’s economic transformation.

# Residents of Urum Community in Awka North Local Government Area held a grand reception for the President-General of the community, Sir Felix Oranye, following his release from prison over the Ochiokwa land dispute involving the community and an estate developer, Nwaguatahihia.
Addressing residents after touring the villages with jubilant community members, Sir Felix thanked God for preserving him throughout his three-month incarceration. He said the sacrifice was not in vain, noting that the government had intervened in the dispute and expressing confidence that justice would ultimately prevail.
He urged the people of Urum to remain united and committed to the development of the community, assuring them that his administration would continue to carry everyone along as long as their actions promote the collective interest of the community.
The Chairman of the Urum Elders Association, Nze Louis Umegbolu, commended the President-General for his resilience during the dispute and appealed to the government to expedite efforts to ensure justice is served and lasting peace restored in the community.
Other stakeholders, including the Chairman of Akitinyi Welfare Union, Mr. Donald Eze; the Vice Chairman of the Urum Land Committee, Chief Onyenwe Ndibe; Mrs. Alice Okoye; and Chief Joseph Obiekwe-Nwankwo, thanked God for what they described as divine intervention. They also urged residents to support the community leadership and avoid actions capable of disrupting the peace of Urum.
Meanwhile, the High Court of the Awka Judicial Division, presided over by Honourable Justice Arinze Akabua, on June 23, 2026, restrained all parties involved in the dispute from selling, transferring, developing, or making any alterations to the disputed land pending the hearing and determination of applications for an injunction.
# The Management of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), has officially inaugurated the newly elected Students’ Union Government (SUG) Executive Council at the College Council Chamber. The event marked the commencement of a new era of student leadership and democratic governance in the institution.
The historic inauguration produced the College’s first female Students’ Union Government President, Miss Patricia Adachukwu Ewulum, who took the oath of office alongside other members of the Executive Council before a distinguished gathering of College Management, Principal Officers, staff, students, security personnel, and invited guests.
Presenting the report of the electoral process, the Chairman of the SUG Electoral Committee, Dr. Law Egbomuche-Okeke, Esq., Ph.D., described the election as one of the most transparent, peaceful, and credible in the history of the College. He stated that the committee worked diligently for two weeks to deliver a free, fair, and violence-free election that produced competent and worthy student leaders.
The Oath of Office was administered by the College Litigation Officer, Barrister Onyebuchi Agbo. In her acceptance speech, the newly elected SUG President pledged to uphold the Constitution of the Students’ Union Government, discharge her duties with integrity, promote the unity and welfare of students, maintain confidentiality where necessary, and serve the student body with dedication and selflessness throughout her tenure.
Formally presenting the newly inaugurated Executive Council to the Provost, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ndu Azubuike, expressed appreciation to the College Management for providing an enabling environment that ensured the successful conduct of the election.
He described the Provost, Engr. Prof. Victor I.O. Ndirika, FNIAE, as a student-friendly administrator whose unwavering commitment to democratic governance, students’ welfare, and institutional development has continued to strengthen cordial relations between the College Management and the student body. He expressed confidence that the new SUG leadership would work harmoniously with Management to promote peace, unity, and sustainable development.
# The Anambra State Hospital Administrator, Dr. Frank Ifeanaeme, on July 7 conducted an unscheduled inspection visit to General Hospital, Enugwu-Ukwu, accompanied by members of his management team, to evaluate staff performance and the quality of healthcare services provided to patients.
During the visit, Dr. Ifeanaeme expressed satisfaction with the commitment of the hospital staff, noting that those on duty were present at their respective duty posts and carrying out their responsibilities diligently.
He toured the various departments and units of the hospital to assess firsthand the standard of patient care and service delivery.
At the maternity unit, the hospital administrator interacted with women who had recently given birth and asked whether they were charged for the services they received. The women confirmed that they benefited from the Anambra State Government’s free delivery programme and paid nothing for their deliveries.
They used the opportunity to express appreciation to the state government and offered prayers for Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for introducing the initiative across state-owned hospitals.
Addressing members of staff, Dr. Ifeanaeme stressed the importance of maintaining accurate and up-to-date records in every department and unit. He noted that proper documentation is fundamental to accountability, efficient healthcare delivery, and institutional transparency.
The hospital administrator, also expressed dissatisfaction with the failure of some staff members to wear their official name tags while on duty. He described the practice as unprofessional, emphasizing that name tags are essential for easy identification and public confidence. He consequently directed that staff members found in default should be issued queries as a deterrent to others.
Dr. Ifeanaeme assured the hospital management that some of the challenges confronting the facility would receive prompt attention to enhance service delivery.
