# Governor Chukwuma Soludo has assured Anambra workers that the state government will recruit more teachers into public schools as soon as possible, describing education and health as the twin pillars of the state’s future.

Speaking at the 2026 Labour Day celebration held at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Governor Soludo emphasized his administration’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing these critical sectors, despite the prevailing economic challenges.

Soludo declared to a crowd of enthusiastic workers and union leaders that education and health are Anambra’s future, and must prioritized.

The Governor commended the resilience and dedication of Anambra workers, acknowledging their sacrifices in building the state’s economy, highlighted ongoing reforms in the education sector, including massive infrastructure upgrades.

# Pioneer Anambra youth leader of Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, now ASTUC, Comrade Osita Ozalagba, has thrown his hat into the ring for the ticket of his party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, for the House of Assembly position in Anaocha two State Constituency.

Ozalagba who made the declaration in his Ward at Ezebazu Hall, Ichida on 19th April, said he would  give them a representation that would go beyond the mace, drawing from his experiences as ASATU youth leader and former Deputy Youth Leader of APGA, and other positions.

He said that representing a people was serious business which went beyond rhetoric and needed people who could change their people’s narrative.

Amid cheers from his ward members who hailed his as ”the Transformer”, Ozalagba, currently the Chairman of the Forum of Anambra State Village Chairmen, said he would key into the vision of the State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, by revolutionizing representation in these parts.

# Anambra State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Humphrey Nwafor, has praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration for its pro-worker policies, including the regular payment of salaries, minimum wage implementation, and the payment of gratuities to retirees, however called for accelerated action on improved working conditions across all sectors.

Comrade Nwafor, while speaking in Awka at the 2026 workers day celebration,
described the event as a globally recognized occasion dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions of workers to nation-building. He emphasized that the core of their struggle remains the pursuit of fairness, dignity, and equity in the workplace.

The NLC Chairman advocated for fair remuneration, job security, and social protection for all members. He lamented that persistent insecurity continues to weaken the foundation of development, forcing many workers into a “survival mode.”

# Former Deputy Chief Whip of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Tony-Uche Ezekwelu, has passed a damning verdict on the state’s local security outfit, Agunaechemba, set up by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, describing its operatives as untrained, unmotivated, and poorly equipped.

He said that the governor hurriedly set up the group without proper planning and arrangements to make it effective and efficient, arguing that the near-zero training of the operatives had resulted in the killing of some innocent people in the state.

Ezekwelu, former National Youth Leader of Ohanaeze Ndígbo Worldwide, lamented that instead of serving the security purpose for which it was established, Agunaechemba operatives are now being used to harass and intimidate innocent people and perceived political opponents.

Ezekwelu said that local vigilantes have made little contributions to the improved security situation in the state and, instead, credited President Donald Trump, saying that the security situation got better after the US military bombed the terrorists’ operational base in Sokoto.

# The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze has described the Nation’s workforce as the true strength of the country as well as the engine that drives the Nation’s economy.

In his goodwill message to Nigerian workers, signed by Mr. Emma Madu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Udeze acknowledged the sacrifice and resilience of the State workers in building a veritable civil and public service system in the State.

The Speaker noted that the present administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has created an enabling environment for workers to operate with fulfillment and job security.

Udeze who appreciated Prof. Soludo for achieving a reformed and transformed civil and public service in the State through provision of enhanced remuneration, training and retraining of workers, prompt payment of salaries, pensions and gratuity among other motivational incentives, maintained that the State government has continued to reward productivity.

Rt. Hon. Udeze commended Anambra workforce for doing the State proud  by distinguishing themselves among their counterparts especially in national and international competitions where Anambra teachers and other civil servants have continued to secure first positions, adding that the robust partnership between the State government and workers has yielded positive transformation.

# The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor, has charged new graduates and newly commissioned evangelizers of Fides School of Theology and Evangelization, Awka, to move with zeal into larger society to make people know more about Jesus Christ and deepen their understanding of Christianity, love of God, and that of neighbour.

‎The Bishop, who gave the charge during the 3rd Matriculation/Graduation Ceremony of the School, emphasized the importance of evangelization, noting that Christ had come to the world but many had no deeper understanding of Him.

While commissioning the new evangelizers during a Pontifical Mass heralding the ceremony, Bishop Ezeokafor urged them to be authentic witnesses to the Gospel of Christ so that through them the Gospel might reach every end of the world.

‎The Prelate also admonished the matriculating students to take their studies seriously for them to learn the teachings of the Church and impart the same to others for them to know the right things and live rightly.

# The Mayor of Awka South LGA, 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱𝘂 𝗢𝗸𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗿 was honoured with a special award by Ward Chairmen of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Awka South.

The Ward Chairmen during the presentation commended the Mayor for his outstanding leadership and impactful contributions to the development of Awka South. They expressed their appreciation for his consistent support and accessibility, noting that he has remained responsive and dependable whenever called upon.

In his response, 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱𝘂 𝗢𝗸𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗿 expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ward Chairmen for the honour bestowed on him. He reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining his efforts and delivering more initiatives for the continued progress and welfare of Awka South Local Government Area.

# A coalition of traditional rulers, community leaders and stakeholders from Dunukofia LGA has issued an open letter to the national chairmen of political parties, urging them to zone the 2027 House of Representatives ticket for the Dunukofia/Njikoka/Anaocha Federal Constituency to Dunukofia in the interest of equity and inclusivity.

The appeal, addressed to the leadership
of major parties, highlights what the signatories described as a “prolonged imbalance” in representation within the constituency.

In the letter, the stakeholders noted that representation in the House of Representatives over the past 28 years has alternated between Njikoka and Anaocha, with the former holding the seat for 16 years and the latter for 12 years.

Dunukofia, they said, has not produced a representative within the period, a situation they argued has fostered a sense of marginalisation among its people.

# The Director-General, National AIDS Control Agency, Dr. Tope Ilori, has inaugurated the Anambra State Technical Team that will be carrying out a survey on the Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Study concerning Anambra State, with the aim of achieving epidemic control in the state.

Inaugurating the team at the 2026 IBBSS state entry meeting held at the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency in Awka, Dr. Ilori, represented by Mrs. Joy Egwuonwu, the Principal Programme Officer of NACA, charged the team to discover people who are living with HIV/AIDS, ensure they are given antiretroviral therapy drugs, and that there is significant viral suppression in the state, among others.

Dr. Ilori, who disclosed that IBBSS is a nationally coordinated survey that helps to improve the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in the state, expressed appreciation to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for appointing a young, vibrant, and competent public health expert, Dr. Hilary Okeke, to oversee the affairs of ANSACA.

# Three months after Barr. Charles Ifeanyi (a lawyer in Anambra) was assaulted by Ocha Brigade officers, Nigerian Bar Association, (NBA) Awka Branch, announces the arrest of one of the ocha brigade officials involved in the assau|t,

In a press release signed by the Publicity Secretary of the NBA Awka branch, Ozojiofor Michael Esq, One of the Ocha Brigade officials involved in the assault,  Mr Ibeto Wisdom Onyebuch, was arrested on the 24th of April 2026 and formally charged to court on the same day with Charge No:MAW/108c/2026 which led to his remand in prison custody till 8th of May 2026.

Part of the press statement reads: “We refer to our earlier press release dated January 20th  2026 in which the Nnamdi Ralph Anagor led administration reported the unfortunate and unprovoked assau|t on Barr. Charles Ifeanyi by members of the Ocha Brigade while calling the attention of the Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo led administration to the brazen recklessness and illegality”

“At the time, we expressed deep concern over the incident and the lack of an immediate official response as well as the absence of meaningful engagement from the leadership of the Ocha Brigade with our branch. Notwithstanding these initial setbacks, deliberate and sustained efforts were undertaken to ensure that justice would be pursued”
