# To ensure sanity and eradicate the menace of hard substances in society, the Naval Outpost Onitsha, has handed over 19 bags of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Onitsha Unit following their recovery at Atani Community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to Commanding Officer, Naval Outpost Onitsha, Commander Kabir Yusuf while addressing pressmen, said the suspected illicit substances were recovered during a routine patrol by personnel of the Forward Operating Base, FOB, Amiyi, at Atani Abo Community.
He said the patrol team sighted a vehicle suspected to be conveying Cannabis Sativa and immediately gave chase where the suspect was said to have abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.
According to the Handover document, a follow-up operation subsequently led security operatives to a warehouse allegedly used by the suspect for storing illicit substances, where a thorough search resulted in the recovery of 19 bags of suspected Cannabis Sativa.
The Naval Outpost formally handed over the recovered substances to the NDLEA Onitsha Unit for further investigation and necessary action and also requested the NDLEA to furnish the base with the outcome of its investigation upon completion.
# Anambra State Government has advised the Traditional Ruler of Abba in Njikoka LGA, Igwe Leonard Nwankwo Ezeh, to cooperate with the elected and government-recognized President General of the community, Dr. Roy Chinweuba, warning that doing otherwise will amount to confrontation with the state government.
In a letter addressed to the leadership and people of Abba community with the title; “Cancellation of Caretaker Committee and Re-instatement of Elected Executive of Abba Town Union led by Dr. Roy Chinweuba”, the state government noted that a meeting between the Traditional Ruler’s group and the group led by the disputed PG, Dr. Chinweuba, was inconclusive as both parties were giving legal notices to the state government, reason the Traditional Ruler was asked to take his children home, reconcile with them and inform the state government.
The letter signed by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Ifeanyi Ezeaka Esq., noted that there is no evidence that the Traditional Ruler acted as directed, and in view of the static position taken by both parties, directed that Dr. Chinweuba and his Executive Committee be restored to power pending the determination of the cases in court since the ministry supervised their election on 28th December 2025.
The state government urged all concerned parties to refrain from any action capable of escalating tension or creating crisis within the Abba community.
# The Anambra State Government, through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPPUD) and its Department of Open Spaces and Recreation, has commenced the planting of 1,000 economic and ornamental trees at strategic locations across Awka metropolis.
The initiative, being implemented under the leadership of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Chijioke Ojukwu, is tagged the “More Greener Campaign.”
The campaign is aimed at improving public spaces, promoting environmental sustainability and creating a healthier, greener and more attractive urban environment.
Speaking on the initiative, Ojukwu reaffirmed the commitment of the state government to building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Anambra.
He stressed that environmental sustainability should be treated as an integral component of urban development rather than a luxury.
The planting exercise covers strategic locations including Ikenga Shopping Mall, Emeka Anyaoku Boulevard, Jerome Udorji Secretariat Complex, Federal Secretariat Complex, Solution Fun City, Amawbia, Kwata and Aroma flyovers.
The varieties being planted include mango, orange, soursop, palm, king palm and masquerade trees, combining economic, environmental and aesthetic benefits.
According to the ministry, the selected locations are predominantly busy public spaces used daily by residents, traders, commuters and visitors.
# The Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON), Catholic Diocese of Ekwulobia (CADEK), has concluded the second edition of its three-day Leadership Seminar, with a call on young leaders to embrace artificial intelligence and emerging technologies without compromising their faith, ethics and moral values.
The seminar at St. Peter Secondary School, Achina, brought together CYON leaders from various parishes and deaneries across the Diocese for spiritual renewal, intellectual engagement and leadership formation.
With the theme, “Leading in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Faith, Ethics and the Future of Leadership,” the programme focused on equipping young catholic leaders with the knowledge and values required to navigate the rapidly changing technological environment.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Rev. Fr. Michael Muonwe urged participants to take advantage of the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence and modern technology while remaining firmly grounded in the catholic faith and sound ethical principles.
Fr. Muonwe stressed the need for responsible and purposeful use of technology, challenging the youth leaders to become agents of positive change who can adapt to technological advancements without compromising their moral convictions and spiritual responsibilities.
He expressed satisfaction with the turnout of CYON leaders from across the Diocese, describing the seminar as an important platform for young catholics to reflect on the demands of contemporary leadership and prepare themselves for greater responsibilities. According to him, effective leadership in the age of artificial intelligence requires more than technological knowledge, stressing that integrity, faith, discernment and ethical responsibility must remain at the heart of leadership.
# The Anambra State 50/50 Action Women Group has launched a grassroots movement to combat the abuse of domestic workers and gender-based violence (GBV), taking its advocacy campaign directly to communities in Ikem Ifite, Nando and Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area.
The campaign was unveiled during the August 2026 meetings of the Ikem Ifite Nando Town Union Women Wing and later replicated in Aguleri as part of a wider community mobilisation initiative spearheaded by the women-led group.
The Women Aid Collective (WACOL) established the 50/50 Action Women Group with support from the Ford Foundation to promote gender equality, protect vulnerable women and children, and challenge discriminatory practices at the grassroots.
Speaking at the gathering, Ifeyinwa Ofodile-Nwafor, Legal Officer at WACOL’s Anambra State office, educated participants on the Child Rights Law in Anambra.
She reminded mothers that domestic workers are entitled to dignity, protection and justice.
# Anambra South Senatorial Aspirant, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, donated ₦50 million to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association, NAUAA, during the association’s Converge 2.0 event held yesterday, August 28, 2026, in Awka.
The donation, which was transferred immediately during the event, is to support alumni projects and initiatives aimed at advancing the university.
Converge 2.0, organized by the 31-member committee inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stanley Ugochukwu Anyaehie, brought together alumni from across Nigeria and the diaspora. The event was designed to strengthen alumni engagement, raise funds for university development, and celebrate the achievements of UNIZIK graduates in various fields.
