The United States hit an impressive Olympic milestone on Tuesday.
When swimmer Bobby Finke won the silver medal in the men’s 800-meter freestyle, it gave the U.S. its 3000th Olympic medal all-time between the Summer and Winter games.
Even more impressive is the gap between the U.S. and the rest of the world. According to ESPN, no country has more than 1,500 combined medals between the Summer and Winter games. Russia/Soviet Union is a distant second place.
The U.S. has performed well during the early days of the games in Paris. With 26 medals, the Americans sit atop the medal table, eight clear of second-place France and 12 ahead of third-place China.
Fifteen of the medals have come in swimming, but the U.S. also has made the podium in fencing, skateboarding, cycling, mountain biking and diving.
There’s also been a bit of history, with the men’s gymnastics team winning its first Olympic team medal in 16 years, a bronze in the men’s artistic gymnastics team finals, and women’s rugby sevens winning bronze, its first ever Olympic medal in the sport.
Simone Biles and U.S. women’s gymnastics also won team gold on Tuesday.
