Why OPay Rolled Out the ₦9,999 Transfer Option for Its Users

OPay has launched a quick-transfer button for 9,999 naira ($5.65) to enable users to sidestep a 50-naira stamp duty on electronic transactions of 10,000 naira or more, a move hailed by customers as attuned to local habits amid broader tax reform debates.

The feature, added discreetly alongside preset options for 5,000 and 10,000 naira, allows one-tap sends just below the taxable threshold, complementing OPay’s policy of no fees on transfers up to five million naira.

Social media users lauded the innovation for its practicality in daily remittances, with one commenter noting: “They noticed a lot of people make transfers like that, they had to create the option.”

Others praised its cultural fit, posting: “OPay dey think like Nigerians” and “OPay is tooo activvvv.”

While compliant with regulations that exempt transfers under 10,000 naira from duty, the button underscores fintech adaptations to user behaviors in Nigeria, where small payments for family, bills, and business are commonplace.

The update emerges as Nigerians grapple with rising transaction costs under recent fiscal changes, prompting platforms to innovate within legal bounds to retain cost-conscious clients.
