The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) joint campus council, Anambra state axis, has protested over
unjust increase in rent by agents and landlords.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that the students took the protest to the Anambra State House of Assembly, on Tuesday.
The Leader of the Students Union, comrade Ifeanyichukwu Chukwuemeka, while speaking, said they are advocating for the welfare of students within tertiary institution host communities across Anambra state on the unjust increase in rent by agents and landlords.
Chukwuemeka noted that they operate without regulation, supervision or accountability and also their actions are arbitrary, oppressive and clearly inimical to the welfare of students and parents.
“We are here to plead that the legislature enact or initiate legislation to regulate, standardize rent within student communities and also fixing standard and reasonable amounts payable to landlords among other prayers.
Responding, on behalf of the Speaker of Anambra Assembly, the Majority Leader Sir. Ikenna Ofodeme, commended the students for tolling the right path by coming to the house of assembly to lay their complaints.
Hon. Ofodeme who is the lawmaker representing Ekwusigo constituency, promised the students that their challenges would be addressed, noting that it’s not just the problem of students but of parents and guidance who pay those rents.
The lawmaker maintained that the Anambra 8th assembly has commenced on a bill that will address the problem, urging the students to be calm.
In their separate speeches, the Chief Whip Barr. Jude Ngobili and Hon Anayo Okpalaeke who is the House Committee Chairman on Education, assured the students that their plight will be a forgone issue within a record time.
