Why We Postponed Enugu Rerun Election: INEC Reveals

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained the reason behind the postponement of the rescheduled rerun election for the Enugu South 1 State Constituency.

According to the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the election was cancelled earlier last week due to security considerations.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Dr. Chukwu revealed that the rerun election, initially scheduled for June 8, would be held on a later date to be announced by the commission.

“But I am surprised some misguided people are taking up all sorts of unfounded falsehoods and rumours against the commission that it seems the election had been held in secret even as I am speaking to you,” he said.

This development comes after the election was nullified by the tribunal due to being inconclusive, despite the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Mr. Bright Ngene, being declared the winner and sworn in.

This is the third attempt by INEC to hold the election.

ANN reports that on Saturday, voters had gathered at the affected polling units as early as 7 a.m., but no INEC officials were present.

The LP candidate, Mr. Ngene, expressed his dismay at the situation, stating that he and his party had not received any information about the election’s postponement.

However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr. Sam Ngene, confirmed that his party had received notification of the postponement.
