* Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State has raised the alarm over looming crisis following alleged plans by Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe to foist already predetermined candidate as the Vice Chancellor of the institution.
The union warned that the Pro-Chancellor’s alarming dictatorial tendencies, if unchecked might breach industrial peace in the University.
Chairperson, ASUU NAU, Comrade Kingsley Ubaoji who stated these, called on Chief of Staff to the President and Minister of Education to rein in the Pro Chancellor to avert chaos on the institution.
* The Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra State has elected new party executives.
The party delegates in the state gathered at the Prof Dora Akwuyili Women Development Centre in Awka and conducted a congress that provided the new leadership. Following the exercise, Comrade Chidi Chidebe was elected as the chairman of the party in the state.
Declaring Chidebe the winner, the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Mr Ifeanyi Ossai, who chaired the Anambra PDP Congress Committee, urged him to rebuild, restore, and reconcile all aggrieved party members in the state.
* The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze has described the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs by President Bola Tinubu as meritorious, deserving and expected.
Udeze while congratulating Ambassador Ojukwu, on her appointment on behalf of the State Legislature, in a release signed by Mr. Emma Madu, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, noted that Ambassador Ojukwu is eminently qualified to serve as Minister, having worked as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain in addition to other exalted offices she had held.
The Speaker who commended President Tinubu for engaging best brains from Anambra State to work with him irrespective of their party affiliations, revealed that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has continued to make meaningful contributions to President Tinubu’s administration with the appointments of Governor Chukwuma Soludo as a member of the Federal Government Economic Team and Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, an APGA Board of Trustees member as Minister.
While praying God to equip Ambassador Ojukwu accordingly to enable her discharge her duties optimally, Udeze enjoined her to bring her wealth of experience to bear in carrying out her functions and strive to make Anambra State proud in her new appointment.
* Shooting at Ifite, behind Unizik, Awka, and nearby Wintess Garden, Ifite Amansea Road on Thursday October 24 has left several people dead.
According to source, at least seven persons were killed in the melee, with preliminary information suggesting that armed men began shooting sporadically, fatally hitting some individuals in the area.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that a police responding team has taken over the scene.
* Information Commissioner, Dr. Law Mefor has paid a courtesy visit to Anambra State’s First Lady, Dr. Nonye Soludo, at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, where he pledged the ministry’s readiness to promote the First Lady’s Healthy Living pet project.
Dr. Mefor used the visit to apprise the First Lady of the reforms he had embarked on to reposition the ministry for better information dissemination and management to achieve strategic communication for the government of Anambra State.
The First Lady, Mrs Nonye Soludo, thanked the Information Commissioner for visiting and for his promised collaboration. She expressed her happiness with the ministry’s achievements within the short period Mefor had spent as commissioner and for his determination and commitment to a new information order in the state and better perception management for the Soludo administration.
* A US-based Anambra philanthropist, Emeka Ezeonu, has unveiled a project to revitalise Nnobi town in the Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Diasporan-based entrepreneur unveiled a one-kilometre road, aimed at ensuring better connectivity for the residents.
Speaking to journalists, while also undertaking the renovation of the Government General Hospital and Doctor’s Quarters in Nnobi, Ezeonu said that he is striving to enhance healthcare delivery within the community.
* A legal practitioner and principal partner of Ralph O. Nzekwe and Co. Raphael Onyibor Nzekwe Esq, has blamed the state government for increasing cult related activitiies in Anambra State capital.
Nzekwe who spoke with some Journalists in his office in Awka stated that the issue of cult activities in the city stems from the state government’s dismantling of the town union in Awka.
He added that Awka, as the state capital, is now insecure, with residents unable to move freely after 6 or 7 PM. He criticized the governor for focusing solely on road construction while neglecting the security of lives and property in the capital.
* The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, has given one month’s notice to political parties for the forthcoming Anambra South senatorial bye-election.
The Commission made this statement at its fourth regular quarterly meeting of political parties, held at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja.
Prof. Mahmood hinted that the Commission would give political parties one month’s notice from the day of its official announcement to present candidates for the bye-election.
The election is part of the race to replace the senator representing Nnewi South Senatorial District, the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who suddenly passed away.
* The Anambra State Ministry of Lands, Awka, hereby announces the commencement of the Recertification and Revalidation of all land title documents, including lands State and Non-State.
All landowners in Anambra State are required to visit the Ministry of Lands, Awka, to recertify and revalidate their title documents and landholdings.
This initiative aims to review and update land records, enhances plot holder information, and upgrade survey records from Nigerian National/Local Origin to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Coordinates System. It will also strengthen property title security and ensure compliance with State regulations in line with global best practices.
The recertification/revalidation exercise will begin on November 4th, 2024, and will end on April 28th, 2025.
* Anambra State Police Command begins investigation on some intercepted videos and voice notes on social media space threatening violence in the state.
According to a release by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer,
Anambra State, the Command not taking those clips for granted and saddled with the responsibility of maintaining law and order shall live up to its mandate of ensuring that no person or group of persons is allowed to infringe on the fundamental human rights of others.
Recall that the Command in the past has arrested some persons involved in such acts of making videos and voice notes to cause tension, and panic to distract the peace of Ndi Anambra.
