* The Managing Director, Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, has called on Officers-in-Charge (OICs) of Primary HealthCare facilities (PHCs) to educate their staff on the procedures of the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF).

Dr. Onyemaechi expressed concern that some nurses at PHCs lack knowledge of BHCPF operations, making them unable to provide care to enrollees in the absence of the OIC.

He made this appeal during a two-day validation exercise with OICs held at the ASHIA office in Awka.

* The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) Anambra State Command, has held its maiden festival of songs of nine lessons and carol in a grand style to usher in Christmas at the State Command Headquarters Awka.

Comdt. Maku Olatunde, the State Commandant while declaring the event open said the joyful gathering provided officers and men a platform to show love to each other, relax and reflect on the reason for the celebration. 

The Commandant hinted that the essence of initiating the Carol of Nine lesson was to welcome the infant Jesus and to celebrate him as the special gift that God gave to the world.

* The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) Branch has commended Governor 

Chukwuma Soludo for payment of 50 percent Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to members.

Dr. Joy Okwumuo, president of ARD-COOUTH who made the  commendation in Awka, confirmed that members had started to receive payment of 50 percent of MRTF.

She expressed the hope that the Medical Residency Act would be domesticated in Anambra and that subsequently, resident doctors would receive 100 percent MRTF on a yearly basis as promised.

* The Anglican Bishop on the Niger, Rt. Rev. Owen Nwokolo has ordained four deacons at the All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha.

Nwokolo while performing the ordination, charged them to maintain their calling and uphold the tenets of the Anglican Communion, Church of Nigeria as they perform their pastoral duties.

The Prelate urged the newly ordained deacons to embrace the principles of Accountability, Contentment, Servanthood among other virtues as ministers of God as they go about their calling and ministry in God’s Vineyard.

The ordained deacons are; Rev. Stanley Nonso Anene, Rev. Obi Chinedu Samuel, Rev. Nkwoeze Amos Onwe and Rev. Unegbe Lotanna Uche 

* In a proactive strategy to address traffic congestions in the State, especially at the First and Second Niger Bridge during and after this yuletide period, the Anambra State Police Command has commenced joint operations with the Anambra State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Delta State Police Command. 

This proactive move was embedded in the operational plan of Anambra Commissioner Of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Item, after a security assessment in the State with the Management of the Police Command to ensure that every sundry issue is addressed. 

The CP visited the two bridges with the Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps Anambra State.

The Commissioner of Police also alerted the Delta State Commissioner of Police on the need for cooperation and intensification of surveillance patrols to nip in the bud all criminal tendencies/ activities on the road and to ensure free-flow of traffic in the area during and after the festive season. 

* Key actors in the justice sector of Anambra State have been charged to spear no efforts in ensuring effective and efficient implementation of the state administration of criminal justice law, ACJL 2022. 

The call was made by speakers at a capacity building workshop organized by Centre for Socio-Legal Studies (CSLS) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Justice, for actors drawn from the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Correctional Service, state counsels in the ministry of justice, judges and magistrates, office of public defenders as well as legal aid and National Human Rights Commission, (NHRC).

During the event, supported by the Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC) programme implemented by International IDEA and funded by European Union, the President of the Centre, Prof. Yemi Akinseye-George, SAN, who joined the meeting virtually, said it was designed to promote a deeper understanding of the provisions of the National Minimum Standards for effective implementation of administration of criminal justice law. 

* The Commissioner of Police Anambra State Police Command, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has taken a proactive step to enhance the proficiency of officers in handling gender-based violence cases. 

The Police Officers were subjected to a 2-day Capacity Building Training at Vertex View Hotel, Awka. 

According to the CP, the training is a crucial step towards combating gender-based violence and promoting gender sensitivity within the Command. It is essential to ensure that Law Enforcement officials are trained to handle such cases with sensitivity and professionalism.

The Training program supported by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), has Operatives from Vision Spring Initiatives led by Ngozi Nwosu-Juba the Project Director and two others as the Facilitators. 

* The House of Representatives has called on security agencies to reduce the excessive security checkpoints on the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway. 

It mandated the Committees on Defence, Army, and Police Affairs to dialogue with the Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police to explore alternative security strategies that will not subject people to hardship or violate their constitutional rights.

* The Nwaeze Solution Team, under the guidance of the Mayor of Onitsha North, Mr. Tony Nwora has embarked on extensive assessment tour of key health centers in the local government area.  

The team, accompanied by the Supervisors for Health and Works, visited Emmanuel Health Centre, Ogboye Health Centre, Woliwo Health Centre, and St. Mary’s Health Centre.

 The visits aimed to identify existing challenges and strategize on effective solutions to enhance healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.  

* The 2024 Annual Thanksgiving Service of Our Saviour’s Church, Umuosuma Lane, Inland Town, Onitsha, witnessed the presence of prominent leaders of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Onitsha North LGA officials.

The General Overseer of Our Savior’s Church, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu SAN emphasised the significance of gratitude. He maintained that thanksgiving is not about material contributions but a heartfelt expression of appreciation to God for His blessings.

The Mayor of Onitsha North LGA,  Nweze Tony Nwora highlighted the importance of being thankful for life and extolled Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his transformative leadership in Anambra State.
