* The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO), Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Mr Christopher Molokwu, on Monday, urged journalists to engage in all forms of sporting activities for general well-being and socioeconomic development.

Molokwu, who stated this at the organisation’s headquarters in Awka, Anambra State capital while receiving newly elected officers of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council led by Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu (PhD), argued that all forms of sports would be beneficial to journalists.

According to him, there was need for journalists to host annual games and encourage members participation in various sporting activities to harness their potential, scout talents among the younger generation as well as maintain healthy living.

Earlier, the re-elected State Chairman, NUJ, Anambra Council, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu sought partnership with the ABS management through the in-house Chapel with a view to harness potential in sports while increasing their visibility and impact in society.

* The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Anambra State Coordinator, Mrs. Blessing Ekene Iruma has encouraged Corps Members to join the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED)
initiative and move away from the pursuit of non-existent white-collar jobs.

Mrs Iruma while speaking at the flag-off of the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream two SAED programme at the Nnamdi Azikiwe NYSC Unity Permanent Orientation Camp in Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, Awka South Local Government Area, highlighted the requirement to follow during training both on-camp and post-camp to qualify for grants.

She urged Corps Members to strive to become job creators and not job seekers, contributing positively to the national GDP.

* The appointment of the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Nze Chidi Duru, as Chairman, Governing Board of Federal Medical Centre (FCM), Lokoja, Kogi State has been hailed as one of President Bola Tinubu’s best decisions.

Reacting to the appointment, a member of the All Progressives Congress in Anambra and the Assistant legal adviser APC, Nnewi North Local Government Area, Barr. Jack Iyioku during a press conference to congratulate Duru, extolled President Tinubu for the appointment, saying that if there was anyone who merits such appointment, especially at a time when the tide of medical tourism outside the country is needed, it was Duru.

It will be recall that Tinubu, recently appointed Duru in a letter conveyed to him and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume (CON).

* Police Operatives attached to Ozubulu Divisional Headquarters responded to a distress call along the Onitsha/Owerri Express Road and recovered the body of a yet to be identified young man.

According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, they hereby seeks assistance from members of the public for possible identification of the victim and other information that will facilitate the ongoing investigative proceedings.

A spot observation by the Police responding team and report from eyewitnesses at the scene reveals that the victim was shot in the stomach by suspected armed men who abandoned his lifeless body and fled the scene.

The body has been deposited at the morgue.

* Mr. Chibuike Uloka, an aide of the chairman of United Nigeria Airline, Prof Obiora Okonkwo has replied to a tirade to his boss by Chinedu Obigwe, and aide to Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Obigwe had in a recent piece vilified Okonkwo for his attacks on Soludo, for describing the governor as being incompetent.

But ina reply, Uloka said Chinedu Obigwe was an unqualified individual desperate for attention, seeking validation for his misguided attempts to masquerade as a media advocate for the helpless and unpopular Governor Soludo.

* In a bid to enhance staff productivity and promote academic excellence, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, has sought partnership with journalists.

This move is aimed at fostering a collaborative relationship between the university and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council.

During a courtesy call at his office, by members of the Re Elected Executive Council of NUJ in Anambra state led by Dr Emeka Odogwu, Ikechebelu emphasized the importance of a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.

He expressed optimism that the partnership would be beneficial to all parties involved, stating, “We need a media partnership to go higher. We want to have a productive staff, and happy productive students. When our staff are happy, and students are happy, they will be progressing.”

* Joint Security Team comprising Police Operatives at Oko Divisional Headquarters and Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) of
Amaokpala acting on the intelligent-driven investigation arrested Micheal Chinweze aged 20 years a native of Iwollo, Eziagu LGA of Enugu State and Mmesoma Agba aged 25 years from Enugwu – Nanka.

One pump action gun, one mobile phone, a black handbag, two tiny glasses suspected to be used in inhaling hard drugs were recovered.

According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, the arrest follows a reported incident on 22nd January 2025 at the Police Station where the suspects and one other who is still at large dispossessed a victim, of her personal belongings around Oko Community Hospital.

To this end, Anambra Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department Awka. CP Itam charged the Operatives to redouble efforts at arresting the other suspects that are currently on the run.

* The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo has donated food items and cash to children of late Mrs. Blessing Nwaka, whose husband recently set ablaze in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area.

The food supply, which was delivered to the children’s grandparents’ home in Irefi Village, Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area where they are currently staying.

Anambra Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, who delivered the food items and cash on behalf of the governor’s wife, explained that she was most concerned about the welfare of the kids, and has placed priority on their education.

Dr Obidike also urged the family to ensure that the items are substantially used for the care of the children, pointing out that the government is committed to their overall welfare, with special attention to their health, education and other primary needs.

* A devastating petrol tanker explosion on Saturday at Ugwu Onyeama has left a trail of grief and devastation, claiming the lives of eleven family members, including the President of the Altar Boys Association at SS John and Paul Parish, Onitsha.

Brother Jeremiah Nwaji, a devout Catholic and leader of the Altar Boys Association, was among the victims of the tragic incident.

He was accompanied by his wife, six children, younger brother, maid, and apprentice, all of whom lost their lives in the blaze.

The family was en route to Ebonyi State to attend the burial of their father, scheduled to hold on January 31.

The journey, meant to be a solemn and respectful tribute to their departed father, turned into an unimaginable tragedy.

* The new Executive of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council has been urged to improve the welfare of
its members.

The Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, Mr Christopher Molokwu made the call when the newly elected Executive of the council and stakeholders paid him an agenda setting visit in his office.

The ABS Boss assured that the establishment will partner the council to organise more training for journalists to enable them do their jobs better.

Molokwu also urged the Chairman of NUJ, Anambra State Council, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu to carry all who contested the just concluded election of the council but lost along for the benefit of the union and use his second term to prove his critics wrong.

In his speech, Dr. Odogwu explained that they visited the ABS Managing Director to seek his assistance for the actualisation of the agenda they have set for the union and thanked him for the fatherly role he played during the election.
