Ohanaeze Youth Council Sets October 25 for “Operation Occupy Abuja” Protest

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has announced that the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest will be extended to Saturday, October 25, under the banner “Operation Occupy Abuja.” The decision follows what the group described as a review of earlier demonstrations.

In a press statement signed by National President Igboayaka Igboayaka and Secretary-General Comrade Ifeanyichukwu Nweke, the OYC declared:

“The use of tear gas, gunshots, beating, harassment against peaceful protesters … has exposed Nigeria … as a country that violates fundamental human rights under the tyrannical and barbaric administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The statement further demanded the immediate release of detained individuals, including Prince Emmanuel Kanu and Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, within 24 hours. It warned that continued suppression of civil rights would “further deepen national discontent.”

Why it matters: The planned expansion of the protest to Nigeria’s capital highlights the depth of discontent among Igbo youth and the growing scale of mobilisation. Analysts say the development could mark a turning point in how aggrieved groups engage the federal government if unresolved grievances continue to escalate.
