Catch Them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI), a youth–led non-profit, non-partisan and community-based organization has called for the establishment of an electoral offences commission to prosecute electoral offenders and uphold election integrity.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that the Executive Director of CATYCOI, Comrade Nonso Orakwe, made the call penultimate Wednesday at a Forum organized under Campaign Against Voter Apathy (CAVA) project in Awka, the state capital.
According to Orakwe, the current laws empowering the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are insufficient to address electoral fraud.
“We have scrutinized the laws, and we couldn’t find provisions that hold individuals accountable for electoral offences,” Orakwe said.
“The commission, when established, will strengthen election integrity and ensure that perpetrators of electoral fraud are brought to justice,” he added.
Orakwe called on the Federal Government to create an independent selection committee to nominate INEC leadership to the National Assembly to remove political influence over electoral authority’s officials.
The Executive Director recommended an adoption of strategy that concludes all post-election disputes before inauguration to ensure stability and fairness.
He urged INEC to implement electronic transmission of election results from all levels of collation to a central place where citizens can access for quicker and transparent election outcomes.
In other demands, the CATYCOI boss urged electoral authorities, security agencies, and other stakeholders to make the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra youth-friendly and inclusive.
He stressed that empowering young voters is essential for ensuring credible and sustainable elections in Anambra and beyond.
