Veteran music producer Don Jazzy has criticised the approach of many new record label owners in Nigeria, warning that a lack of respect for artists is undermining the development of genuine superstars.
Responding to a social media question on the biggest mistakes made by new labels, the Mavin Records boss said many young executives misunderstand what it takes to manage and groom talent.
“I might be wrong but I’ve noticed some record label bosses don’t respect their artists,” he wrote. “If you know you are aiming at building a huge superstar, start from day one to accord them that respect.”
Don Jazzy, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential music executives, noted that upcoming label owners often admire his public persona but end up adopting the wrong traits.
“Most of the new label bosses actually look up to me but copy the wrong thing because of my Don persona,” he said. “90% of the time around my artists I let them be the superstars that they are. It’s only 10% of the time that I really need to be Supremos.”
