# Tension is building in Anambra State as a coalition of traditional authorities in Awka has openly challenged efforts to alter the schedule of the revered Egwu Imo Awka Festival, setting the stage for a broader confrontation that now intersects with the deepening contest over the Ezeuzu traditional stool.
At the center of the dispute is an alleged move by state officials to have the festival dates adjusted to accommodate political activities tied to the ruling party’s convention and primary elections. However, custodians of Awka’s spiritual institutions have drawn a firm line, insisting that the festival calendar is beyond political negotiation.
At a high-level gathering held recently at Obu Imoka, influential chief priests, titled elders, and traditional functionaries issued what amounts to a doctrinal veto against any proposed shift. Their position was unequivocal: “Once the deity reveals the date through Igu Aro, that date is final. It cannot be amended by any human authority.”
Multiple speakers at the meeting emphasized that neither political authorities nor local administrative figures possess the legitimacy to intervene. “No one—not the Chief Priest, not Ezeuzu, not the President General, and certainly not any non-indigene—can change the date once it is fixed,” one of the custodians stated.
