Kwankwaso Leaves 2027 Ticket Decision to NDC, Open to Obi Ticket

Former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said the New Democratic Coalition (NDC) will determine whether he runs as its presidential candidate in 2027 or serves as running mate to Peter Obi.

Kwankwaso, who was the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in 2023 and secured 1,496,687 votes, made the remark while addressing questions on his political alignment with the former Labour Party candidate.

When asked if he would accept running as Obi’s deputy, Kwankwaso replied: “That is a decision the party will make.”

He noted that an internal debate is currently ongoing within the NDC on the zoning of the presidential ticket.

“This debate is still ongoing within the NDC party on whether the presidential ticket should remain in the North or be moved to the South. I am certain that within the next few days, it will be resolved and we will know the appropriate decision,” Kwankwaso said.

Both Kwankwaso and Peter Obi recently announced their defection to the NDC following internal crises and court cases that affected the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The former governor stressed that the coalition is yet to zone its presidential ticket to any region, adding that a final decision on the matter and on his own position will be taken by the party leadership soon.

The development has heightened speculation about a possible alliance between the two prominent opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
