Partey Denied Entry to Canada, to Miss Ghana’s World Cup Opener

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey will miss his country’s opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Panama after being denied entry into Canada despite holding a valid visa.

The 32-year-old Villarreal player, who is facing rape and sexual assault charges in the UK but has pleaded not guilty, was refused entry by Canadian authorities while the team is based in Boston, United States.

FIFA confirmed the development, stating it has no role in host countries’ immigration decisions.

“FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas,” the world governing body said.

Partey remains available for Ghana’s subsequent Group L matches against England in Boston and Croatia in Philadelphia. Ghana could potentially return to Canada in the knockout stages if they advance.

Ghana’s sports minister Kofi Adams described the decision as “absolutely wrong,” noting that Partey has not been convicted.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz had earlier defended his decision to include the player in the squad.

Ghanaian fans reacted with shock and disappointment on social media. The incident adds to several visa and entry issues affecting teams and officials at the ongoing tournament.
