Belgian international Jérémy Doku has pulled out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to return home and be with his wife as the couple prepares to welcome their first child.
The 24-year-old winger made the announcement as Belgium advanced to the crucial knockout stages of the tournament, where matches have grown increasingly intense.
In a statement, Doku explained that his wife’s approaching due date prompted the unexpected decision.
“My family needs me right now,” he said, adding: “I’ve decided to withdraw from World Cup and return to my wife to stay by her side as we welcome the birth of our child… The team is right in the crucial knockout stage and every match is a grueling battle.”
Doku expressed gratitude to his teammates for their efforts and to fans for their support throughout the competition, while acknowledging the personal priority overriding his commitment to the national team.
“Everyone has given their best for the victory. As a footballer, I love this sport deeply, I cherish my teammates… Yet when my wife told me her due date was drawing nearer my heart made it clear,” he stated.
