President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 3,252 verified Parent-Teacher Association teachers into the federal civil service.
The decision aims to ease chronic teacher shortages in Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges, Education Minister Tunji Alausa said in a statement on Thursday.
Priority will go to the verified PTA teachers, many of whom have taught in the federal schools for nearly 25 years without permanent appointments.
“This is a president who cares deeply for Nigeria and for the future of our country,” Alausa said. “The president has approved the recruitment of teachers. Priority will be given to absorbing verified PTA teachers, many of whom have served in our Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges for almost 25 years. This approval provides them with the opportunity to become part of the mainstream public service.”
An inter-ministerial committee conducted a comprehensive verification exercise that screened eligible teachers across the cadres of Education Officers, Assistant Education Officers and Technical Instructors.
Alausa described the move as a milestone under the Renewed Hope Agenda that would improve teacher-student ratios, preserve institutional knowledge and strengthen classroom instruction.
For years, Federal Unity Colleges have relied on PTA-funded teachers to fill staffing gaps. Many of those educators have worked for between 10 and 25 years performing the same duties as regular government teachers while lacking job security and benefits.
The ministry said remaining statutory processes would be completed with transparency and fairness before final appointments are issued.
