WhatsApp to impose per-message charges on businesses from October

WhatsApp will begin charging businesses for customer service replies sent through its Business Platform from October 1, 2026, a change that is expected to raise communication costs for companies that rely heavily on the messaging service.

The new pricing applies only to businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform, also known as the WhatsApp Business API. It does not affect ordinary users or those operating the standard WhatsApp Business app.

Under the updated model, businesses will pay for delivered service messages that were previously free within WhatsApp’s customer service window.

For Nigerian numbers, a chargeable utility-type message will cost about $0.0101, or roughly 14 naira. Marketing messages will be more expensive, at approximately $0.062, or about 84 naira per message.

The costs could add up quickly for high-volume users. A Nigerian fintech sending 500,000 chargeable messages at the utility rate, for example, would face about $5,050 in Meta messaging fees alone, before any additional charges from service providers.

WhatsApp has become a major channel in Nigeria for customer service, sales, order updates and payment confirmations. Banks, fintechs, airlines, retailers, telecoms firms and smaller businesses increasingly depend on it for large-scale communication.

Meta began shifting towards per-message pricing in July 2025, when it replaced its earlier conversation-based model for business-initiated template messages. Service messages had remained free inside the 24-hour customer service window until the forthcoming change.

Businesses will now need to monitor more closely the volume and category of messages they send. Rates vary by the recipient’s country and message type, meaning companies operating across African markets will face differing charges.

The move does not introduce any general fee for personal messaging or for the standard WhatsApp Business application. It applies specifically to organisations using Meta’s Business Platform for scaled customer communication.
