Major opposition figures, including former vice president Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra governor Peter Obi, are expected to meet in Abuja on Monday for talks aimed at building cooperation ahead of the 2027 general election.
The summit, convened by the G100 group at the Yar’Adua Centre, will bring together leaders from six parties: the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.
Themed “A Framework for Opposition Cooperation and Coordination,” the meeting is intended to establish a formal structure for negotiations rather than immediately decide a joint presidential candidate.
G100 convenor Salihu Moh. Lukman said the priority was broader than candidacy.
“The first question before party leaders is not who leads the ticket. It is what we are, together, prepared to do for this country,” he stated.
Lukman added that the summit would not determine presidential candidacy in a single sitting but would authorise an architecture for collective and transparent negotiations.
The group proposes five specialised working groups, subject to party approval, to develop key documents and agreements within four weeks.
The initiative follows weeks of private consultations with national chairmen, presidential candidates and running mates after G100 released its “Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition” on August 2.
Atiku is the ADC presidential candidate, while Obi is the NDC candidate. Both camps have expressed openness to cooperation, though neither has indicated readiness to step aside automatically.
