The Anambra South Senatorial candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, has vowed to facilitate the industrialisation of Nigeria if elected, through the sponsorship of bills and motions aimed at improving power supply, infrastructure and security.
Onunkwo, who is the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Seahorse, stated this on Tuesday during an interaction with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, who were on a facility tour of his company in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area (LGA).
The senatorial hopeful said improved power supply would provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, noting that reliable electricity was critical to industrial growth and economic development.
According to him, addressing insecurity and providing good road networks would reduce the challenges faced by businesses in production and distribution, while improving their access to raw materials, customers and markets, particularly in the Southeast geopolitical zone.
He said he would also sponsor bills to promote the Igba Boyi, or Igbo apprenticeship model, as well as legislation to enable the Federal Government to establish industrial clusters and provide credit facilities to businesses and entrepreneurs.
He added that such measures would encourage more people to acquire skills, invest in businesses and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Onunkwo, who regretted that many businesses had shut down across the country due to challenges which he described as surmountable, said addressing those challenges would enable existing businesses to survive, attract new investments, create jobs and help tackle insecurity.
The senatorial candidate further reiterated his commitment to providing scholarships to students across the communities and the seven local government areas that make up the constituency and beyond.
He said his continued investment in education was informed by his belief that empowering the younger generation through education remained one of the most effective ways of securing the future.
Explaining why he decided to leave his business empire to join politics, Onunkwo said he needed a bigger platform to extend his philanthropic activities beyond Ekwusigo Local Government Area and contribute more directly to national development.
He also highlighted some of the projects and interventions he had undertaken across the seven local government areas in Anambra South, including initiatives aimed at tackling insecurity through job creation, mitigating erosion, boosting business opportunities and promoting industrialisation.
Onunkwo expressed confidence in winning the January 2027 senatorial election, saying the people had demonstrated their support for his candidacy.
He said his attendance at more than 200 August meetings across the constituency had further convinced him that the people were yearning for what he described as “a breath of fresh air.”
The NDC candidate also called on men and women of goodwill to participate actively in politics and contribute to providing good governance and the dividends of democracy to communities across the country.
He said greater participation by credible individuals in politics would help prevent society from falling into the hands of people who might not have the interests of the people at heart.
Speaking after the facility tour, the Anambra State Chairman of the NUJ, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, said he was impressed by the cordial working relationship between Onunkwo and his staff.
Dr. Odogwu urged him to sustain the relationship, noting that history would remember him for the impact of his contributions to society.
Odogwu led the State Working Committee and other members of the union on the facility tour, which formed part of activities marking the 2026 NUJ Press Week and the 35th anniversary of the union in Anambra State.
