# A Fellow of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (FNGE), Sir Victor Agusiobo, has challenged journalists to embrace a more consequential form of journalism that goes beyond objectivity, fact-checking and balancing of viewpoints to address the question: “So what?”
Agusiobo, a seasoned journalist, editor, journalism teacher and media commentator, made the call while speaking as Guest Speaker at the 35th Anniversary celebration of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, on the theme, “A Responsible Press: Answering the ‘So What?’”
He maintained that even an intelligent primary school pupil appeared to have some understanding of who a responsible journalist is and what a responsible press should be.
Reflecting on the meaning of responsibility, Agusiobo recalled the observation of a reflective thinker who once said that “responsibility is a detachable burden, easily shifted to God, to one’s neighbour, and in the days of astrology, to a star.”
He challenged journalists to consider what truly makes a press responsible, asking whether the responsibility lies with the audience, media owners, government, advertisers or the conscience of practitioners themselves
# The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, has honoured the APGA candidate for Awka North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Obby Nwankwo, recognising his contributions to public service and his longstanding relationship with the media.
The recognition came during activities marking the 35th Anniversary of the NUJ Anambra State Council and the 2026 Press Week, celebrating individuals who have contributed meaningfully to public service and the development of journalism in Anambra State.
Receiving the award on behalf of Hon. Nwankwo, Mr. Kenneth Ikechukwu highlighted his extensive experience in government, noting that his public service journey cut across key sectors of the state.
Ikechukwu also described Hon. Nwankwo as a friend of the media, noting his appreciation of journalism as an essential instrument for public information, accountability and democratic governance.
He stressed the importance of maintaining a strong connection with the people through the media, saying, “You cannot represent people without continually mirroring what is transpiring there with them.”
# The Anambra State Police Command has arrested 36-year-old Anulika Onyeanusia in Onitsha over allegations of child pornography following a viral video that allegedly showed a minor being sexually abused with a sex toy.
Police said the operation, carried out on September 10, 2026, led to the rescue of four children aged 2, 3, 6 and 9, and the recovery of sex toys and other items relevant to the investigation. The suspect remains in custody, while her husband is also being questioned to determine whether he had any involvement.
Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama has ordered a thorough investigation and directed that the rescued children receive appropriate protection, counselling and other support. Police said their identities and privacy would be protected.
The Command also commended vigilante operatives, bloggers and residents whose information assisted in the arrest and investigation.
# Anambra-based journalist, Comrade Ekpa Ewa Eke, on Thursday, September 10, 2026, emerged winner of the Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna Ethical Journalism Award.
Ekpa Ewa received the award at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council’s 35th Anniversary and 2026 Man of the Year Awards Press Week Grand Finale in Awka.
Speaking before presenting the award, the leader of the judging panel, Sir Chuka Nnabuife, said the winners distinguished themselves by paying attention to details that others ignored, while demonstrating bravery, clarity and confidence in their reports.
Sir. Nnabuife thanked the NUJ for giving the panel the opportunity to serve and expressed hope that next year’s edition would be even more impactful.
The first runner-up, Comrade Uche Ndeke, received N100,000 for his report on the flooding challenges confronting various communities in Anambra State.
The second runner-up, Comrade Chukwuebuka Chukwuma Oguocha, received N50,000 for his report titled, “Constraints in Nise Community of Awka South LGA, Anambra State.”
Speaking after receiving the award and a cash prize of N350,000, Ekpa Ewa described Prof. Okunna as a true beacon and role model in the journalism profession.
She said winning the award was a moment she would treasure forever.
While congratulating the winners, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna said she had increased the prize money to N500,000 to further encourage ethical journalism among journalists in Anambra State.
Prof. Okunna described journalists as the conscience of society and urged them, as the Fourth Estate of the Realm, to practise their profession with a strong sense of responsibility to the public.
# The General Manager and Chief Editor of Angel Network News (ANN), Dr. Ifeanyi Valentine Obiefuna on Thursday September 10th 2026, received Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra Outstanding Media Support awards.
NUJ Anambra State Council Secretary, Dr. Okechukwu Onuegbu while presenting the award on 35th anniversary and 2026 Man Of The Year Awards and Press Week Grand Finale, held at the Annabel Event Centre, Awka, urged Dr. Obiefuna sustain his effort in the media industry.
Dr. Obiefuna in appreciation, dedicated the award to all Nigeria youths and to all those who are in prison who have not committed any offense.
Dr. Obiefuna is a media executive and educator, committed to building a career through hard work, intergrity and teamwork to achieve organizational goals.
Dr. Ifeanyi Obiefuna holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from St. Paul’s University, Awka; Ph. D, Political Philosophy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, M. A, Philosophy, UNIZIK, Diploma in Law, Lagos State University.
Dr. Obiefuna is an adept in Analytical Thinking, Interpersonal and Verbal Communication, Presentation Skills, Time management, Attention to Details, Team Leadership and Conflict Resolution as well as Computer Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Programming Packages.
He is a visionary media leader, combining academic dept with practical journalism and community service.
# The Anambra State Government has pledged to partner with journalists in the state on welfare and health, even as it urged media practitioners to uphold responsible and development-driven reporting.
The Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, made this known on behalf of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council’s 35th Anniversary and 2026 Man of the Year Awards/Press Week Grand Finale, held at the Annabel Event Centre, Awka.
Dr. Mefor noted that Anambra is currently witnessing massive infrastructure development across all sectors. “To a very reasonable extent, Anambra is a construction site. Things are happening. All manner of projects are ongoing,” he said.
Dr. Mefor commended NUJ Anambra for 35 years of growth, noting that the council was founded same year as the state, and assured journalists of government’s support, urging them to reach out whenever they face challenges.
Responding to the NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya’s
call for “cheap and cheerful” healthcare for journalists, he mentioned the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme, saying that for just ₦12,000, any resident can access health interventions, with a few exceptions like cancer.
He added that government would work with the NUJ State Chairman, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu and the council to explore group enrollment for journalists in the state.
Speaking on the role of the media, Dr. Mefor said journalism is the only profession mentioned in the 1999 Constitution with the specific mandate to hold government accountable.
# The Government of Anambra State has moved to strengthen the Anambra State School System by aligning both public and private schools in the State with the Solution Agenda on education. This move is intended to unify the education system in Anambra State for maximum quality output.
During a well-attended meeting of proprietors of private schools, which was held in Awka, Anambra State, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, outlined the focus of the Government to strengthen teaching and learning by ensuring compliance with the Anambra State School System to produce the same quality result across board (private and public education) in Anambra State.
Speaking, Dr. Ogugua emphasized the State Government’s willingness to collaborate with private schools in Anambra, as well as support them with necessary tools to key into the State policy framework on education and comply with approved operational guidelines set by the government. The Commissioner also encouraged school proprietors to take advantage of ongoing online training programmes developed by the government to enhance the teaching capabilities of their teachers.
# The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, has reaffirmed the Soludo administration’s commitment to providing equitable access to quality education across the state, assuring the people of Oroma Etiti Anam of continued government support for educational development.
Ogugua gave the assurance while receiving members of the Oroma Etiti Anam Education Committee, led by the President-General of the community, Mr. Charles Nchezor, during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Education in Awka.
The commissioner commended the delegation for its commitment to improving education in the community, noting that the state’s education reform agenda is designed to ensure that every child has access to quality learning opportunities.
He urged parents and community leaders to support government’s efforts by ensuring that all school age children are enrolled in school and by promoting the importance of education.
Ogugua also called on the community to utilise its town union structures to address cases of school land encroachment, stressing that the protection of educational infrastructure is a shared responsibility.
He assured the delegation that Oroma Etiti Anam would continue to benefit from the state’s educational programmes and interventions.
# The Executive of the Catholic Women Organization (CWO), St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Awka, led by their President, Lady Ngozi Offodile, has paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, to congratulate her on her appointment. During the visit, the group presented her with an award and offered fervent prayers for God’s guidance over her tenure.
Responding, the Commissioner thanked the group for the visit and the honour done to her. She urged the Organization to intensify efforts, to use the platform of the Church to enlighten women and mothers on the ethics of a godly family.
She placed special emphasis on newly married couples, noting that the Church has a vital role to play in ensuring that marriage rites and processes are properly observed, since the desired change in society begins from the home, extends to the Church, the Community, and ultimately the State at large.
# The Nawfia Women Wing Home and Abroad has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting unity, community development and cultural preservation during its 2026 General Meeting.
The meeting brought together members from Nigeria and the diaspora to review the association’s activities, assess ongoing projects and adopt strategies to improve women’s welfare, support education, promote youth development and strengthen ties among members.
Speaking at the meeting, the President of the association, Evangelist Mrs. Georgina Mbaonu, commended members for their steadfast commitment despite prevailing economic challenges.
Mbaonu urged the women to remain united and sustain their support for initiatives aimed at advancing the development of Nawfia community.
