Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday paid a visit to former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi at his residence in Abuja, days after emerging as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for 2027.
Atiku was accompanied by former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu and other senior party leaders.
The closed-door meeting came as the party seeks to mend fences following Amaechi’s rejection of the primary results, which Atiku won with a wide margin.
Details of the discussions were not made public.
Atiku had on Wednesday appealed directly to Amaechi and the other main contender, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, to set aside their grievances.
“I therefore appeal to all those who feel aggrieved to come back to our party and close ranks with the rest of us,” he said after his victory was declared.
“In particular, I invite Chief Rotimi Amaechi and Alhaji Muhammad Hayatu-Deen to join me in this fight to save our democracy and our country,” Atiku added.
He insisted there were “no winners and no losers” in the primary and pledged to work with all stakeholders.
“As I said previously, there are no winners and no losers. Our people look up to us for leadership, and I am ready to lead,” he stated.
Amaechi had earlier rejected the results, citing widespread voter disenfranchisement, while Hayatu-Deen also alleged irregularities.
Atiku polled 1,846,370 votes to Amaechi’s 504,117 and Hayatu-Deen’s 177,120 in the direct primary conducted across the country.
