Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), pledging to build a strong opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
The two prominent politicians were received into the party on Sunday at the NDC national secretariat in Abuja, where National Chairman Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe presented them with membership cards.
Obi, who recently exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC), used the occasion to caution new and existing members against internal wrangling that could destabilise the party.
“Please let there be no litigation. Party members, please don’t go to court. We want to build a party, we are not lawyers,” he pleaded.
He urged members to embrace dialogue instead of resorting to legal battles that might plunge the party into chaos.
Kwankwaso, who had been consulting widely with NDC stakeholders, said their decision was based on alignment of vision and ideology.
“We came to discuss with stakeholders of the party and found that our ideologies and beliefs are largely the same,” he stated.
He called on Nigerians to register with the NDC before the membership registration deadline, emphasising the importance of broad participation in the political process.
The development marks a significant realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics, as both leaders seek a unified platform capable of mounting a credible challenge in the next general elections.
Their formal induction followed an earlier meeting at the residence of a key NDC figure in Abuja.
The NDC is positioning itself as an alternative force amid ongoing fragmentation within other opposition parties.
