# Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has declared that the long-standing challenges surrounding autonomous communities in the state have been effectively resolved.
Prof. Soludo made this announcement on Sunday during a mass celebration held in honor of his Aide-de-Camp (ADC), DSP Tony Amadi at the Light House in Awka.
Governor Soludo in his speech, attributed the resolution of these issues to a recent landmark judgement delivered by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
For years, the status and administration of autonomous communities in Anambra have been a subject of intense debate, leading to various administrative and traditional leadership disputes across the state.
While referencing Isuofia, his community whoch had been bedeviled by the same issue, Governor Soludo indicated that this finality provides the necessary clarity for the government to move forward with its development agenda at the grassroots level.
# Anambra State Government has concluded preliminary feasibility studies and consultations, developed work plans, and is now ready to partner with different communities to elevate major local festivals to international events.
The Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Barrister Udoji Amedu, revealed this while attending the Omaliko Festival of Abatete Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
Amedu said the plan would also extend to heritage and tourist sites such as Ogbunike Cave, Owerre-Ezukala Caves and Waterfalls, as well as festivals such as the Eri Festival, which has already started attracting foreign visitors.
The Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr. Law Mefor, who is also an indigene of Abatete, said the community is ready to welcome visitors and partners, as the festival has been reformed to meet international standards and become a major tourist attraction.
# The organisers of the Anambra Man of the Year (AMTY) Awards have nominated
the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Paul University, Awka, Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna for the Lifetime Achievement Award category, recognizing her outstanding contributions to journalism, academia, media development, and public service.
According to the Chairman of the AMTY 5th Edition Planning Committee, Professor Adaoma Igwedibia, the nomination acknowledges Prof. Okunna’s decades of impact in communication scholarship, journalism education, governance, and mentorship.
“Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna represents excellence, leadership and service. Her contributions to academia, journalism and nation-building make her deserving of this recognition,” Igwedibia stated.
Prof. Okunna holds a historic place in African academia as the first female Professor of Mass Communication in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Throughout her distinguished career at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, she served in several leadership capacities, including Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, and Director of UNIZIK 94.1 FM.
Beyond academia, Prof. Okunna played key roles in the administration of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, serving as Commissioner for Information and Culture, Chief of Staff, and Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget.
# The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has advised residents to desist from dumping refuse into drainages and water channels, warning that the practice could worsen flooding and other avoidable disasters during the rainy season.
Speaking on Monday at the NSCDC State Command Headquarters in Awka, the Anambra State Commandant, Maku Olatunde, through the Head of Media and Tactical Operations, Okadigbo Edwin, said heavy rainfall is often accompanied by increased risks of flooding, building collapse, erosion, and other environmental hazards.
According to the Command, many of these incidents can be prevented if residents adopt proper waste disposal practices and comply with established safety guidelines.
The NSCDC urged citizens to regularly clear drainages around their homes and business premises, avoid building on waterways, and refrain from activities that obstruct the free flow of water.
Okadigbo noted that blocked drainage systems remain one of the major causes of flooding in communities, often leading to the destruction of property and, in severe cases, loss of lives.
He also advised residents of riverine communities to remain vigilant and be prepared to relocate to safer, higher ground whenever water levels begin to rise.
The spokesperson disclosed that the NSCDC is collaborating with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), local government authorities, and the Anambra State Government to implement comprehensive flood mitigation measures for the 2026 rainy season.
# The Chairman of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Amaka Obi, has flagged off the construction of a new road project in Ejighinandu Village, Awka-Etiti, describing it as a major step towards improving infrastructure and boosting economic activities in the community.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, which was attended by the Secretary to the Local Government; the Head of Department, Works; the President-General of Awka-Etiti, Councillors, Ward Executives and other Stakeholders, Obi commended Mr. Nnaemeka Olisakwe for partnering with the government through the Public-Private-Community Partnership (PPCP) initiative.
The Mayor noted that the collaboration reflects the importance of collective responsibility in addressing community challenges and delivering sustainable development projects.
According to Obi, the road project will improve access for farmers, facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce to markets and create greater economic opportunities for residents of Awka-Etiti and neighbouring communities.
# Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor has pledged full partnership with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to drive voter education, peaceful elections, and attitude change.
Dr. Mefor made the commitment when a NOA delegation led by the South East Zonal Director, Mrs Theresa Maduekwe, and Anambra State Director, Barr Ifeoma Chijioke, paid him a courtesy visit at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka.
The commissioner said the ministry’s “Value Reformation” mandate aligns directly with NOA’s core work of attitude change.
According to Mefor, Governor Chukwuma Soludo had modified the ministry’s mandate and placed the Anambra Civic and Social Reformation Agency under it, making the ministry the “mother ministry” for reorientation and value reformation.
The Commissioner advocated his “morasuasion and enforcement” model to achieve behaviour change, stressing that enlightenment or advocacy without enforcement is not enough.
# The lawmaker representing Oyi Constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Innocent Ojike has filed a suit challenging the outcome of the party’s primary election.
Ojike, an aspirant of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), for the Oyi Constituency at the recently primary election is contesting APGA’s declaration of Kosisochukwu Ibemesi as the winner of the primary election conducted on May 23, 2026.
The suit, marked FHC/AWK/CS/173/2026, was filed at the Federal High Court in Awka by his counsel, Reuben Atabo (SAN). APGA, Ibemesi and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were listed as defendants in the case.
According to the court filings dated June 4, Ojike claimed he secured the highest number of lawful votes cast during the primary election, polling 3,524 votes. He maintained that he was duly declared winner by what he described as the legally recognised returning officer, Dr. Nnewaluem James.
The lawmaker argued that he remains the lawful candidate of APGA for the Oyi State Constituency election and cited Section 84(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, in support of his claims.
# Residents of Anambra State can now access free hypertension screening services at all public health facilities across the state, following a directive from the Anambra State Ministry of Health aimed at strengthening preventive healthcare and promoting early disease detection.
The State Hospital Administrator, Dr. Frank Ifeanaeme disclosed this while announcing the directive issued by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, mandating all government-owned hospitals and health centres to provide blood pressure screening services free of charge.
According to Dr. Obidike, the initiative is part of the state government’s commitment to improving public health outcomes through the early detection and management of non-communicable diseases, particularly hypertension.
He explained that the free screening programme will be available in all Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs), Comprehensive Health Centres and General Hospitals throughout the state, ensuring that residents have convenient access to regular blood pressure checks and appropriate medical guidance.
