The wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been formally charged with bribery in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation, just as Sánchez was engaged in high-level talks with Chinese officials in Beijing.
Begoña Gómez, who has faced scrutiny for several months over alleged influence-peddling and misuse of her position, was notified of the charges on Monday, according to Spanish judicial sources.
The case centres on her involvement in private business ventures and alleged favouritism in awarding public contracts and securing sponsorships.
Spanish media reported that Gómez is accused of leveraging her proximity to power to benefit companies linked to friends and associates.
A judicial spokesperson said: “The investigation has produced sufficient evidence to formally charge Mrs Gómez with bribery and related offences.”
Prime Minister Sánchez, who is currently in China for bilateral economic talks, has not issued a direct comment on the charges. His office described the matter as a “private legal issue” and expressed full confidence in the judicial process.
The timing of the charges has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who accuse the government of attempting to downplay the scandal during an important international trip.
Sánchez’s visit to China is focused on trade relations and investment opportunities, with both sides expected to sign several cooperation agreements.
