# Governor Chukwuma Soludo has formally reiterated his administration’s dedication to a governance model defined by inclusivity and professional competence rather than sectarian considerations.

Addressing attendees at the Anglican Diocesan Synod in Ezira, the Governor emphasized that his mandate is designed to serve all residents of the state, encompassing diverse religious and traditional backgrounds.

During his address, Soludo articulated a recruitment philosophy centred exclusively on the ability of individuals to deliver results, maintaining that public service appointments under his administration are determined by the value proposition an individual offers and dismissing the relevance of religious or denominational affiliations in professional appointments.

The Governor noted that effective governance prioritises the practical capability to advance the state’s developmental agenda over personal religious identity.

# No fewer than two police officers attached to the Anambra State Police Command were fatally wounded on Sunday night during a gun battle with yet-to-be-identified gunmen in the state.

Reports have it that the gunmen launched an attack on the police vehicle, prompting them to respond immediately, during which a gun duel ensued. This was corroborated by a video from a tricycle operator (Keke driver) who claimed to have witnessed the incident.

Although the tricyclist could not provide the full details of the attack, the video showed an abandoned Hilux vehicle at the scene, with the remains of the fatally-wounded officers.

However, speaking in an interview, on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack and said the incident occurred along the Ndiukwuenu—Amansea road in the late hours of Sunday.

# The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Female Football Team defeated King and Queens Football Academy of Umudioka 2-1 in a friendly match played at the Coke Centre football pitch, UNIZIK.

The match is part of the team’s preparations for the 12th All Africa University Games, scheduled for 9th to 16th August, 2026 in Cairo, Egypt.

UNIZIK took the lead in the 15th minute through Chiamaka Favour Okafor before Chidimma Okoye doubled the advantage in the 38th minute. The visitors pulled one back in the second half, but the UNIZIK side held on for the win.

The victory follows an earlier 4-0 thrashing of Ojoto in another preparatory match as the team intensifies build-up to the continental event.

# A 52-year-old security supervisor, Mr. Nkemakolam Nwachukwu, narrowly escaped being lynched by a mob after he was severely beaten in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area, Anambra State, following a false accusation that he caused a man’s genitals to disappear.

According to Nwachukwu, he was returning home after completing an overnight shift at the Ogbaru Industrial Layout when two young men confronted him near Kara Market. One of the men allegedly accused him of making his manhood disappear after they passed each other on the road.

The accusation quickly attracted a crowd and escalated into a violent mob attack. Nwachukwu reportedly lost consciousness during the assault and later suffered permanent blindness in one eye due to the injuries sustained.

The Spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that an investigation into the incident was ongoing and assured the public that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice, saying that no stone will be left unturned.

# Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has formally called for a shift from disruptive agitation to structured, empirical debate regarding the role and position of the Igbo people within the Nigerian state.

The Governor’s remarks were delivered at the Light House in Awka following a stage production titled “The Tale of Two Nnamdis,” performed by students from the Theatre Arts and Film Department of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Governor Soludo emphasized the necessity of moving academic and political discourse away from historical grievances and toward a more constructive national dialogue, highlighted a perceived void in current engagement, noting that the complexities surrounding the regional and national position of the Igbo populace require a disciplined, intellectual approach rather than the reactive methods observed in recent years.

Addressing the impact of previous agitation strategies, the Governor specifically criticized the “sit-at-home” directives that have persisted for half a decade, arguing that such tactics are counterproductive, and asserted that they inflict significant economic and social harm upon the very population they claim to represent.

The Governor advocated for the revival of a political tradition rooted in negotiation and civil diplomacy, referencing the historical strategies of Nnamdi Azikiwe and suggested that the path to influence within the Nigerian federation lies in bargaining and active participation in the political process, rather than withdrawal or antagonism.

# An Anambra High Court, presided over by Justice Lauretta Oyeka, has sentenced a commercial tricycle rider, Makuachukwu Ezike, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of murdering one Jude Onwuegbuchunam, an indigene of Umuoji in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

Recall that on 17th November 2019, along the Oba-Obosi-Nkpor-Umuoji Road, Ezike and his two gang members, who are still at large, while posing as a commercial tricycle rider and passengers, picked up an unsuspecting Onwuegbuchunam and, midway into his journey, attempted to rob him of his phone and other valuables.

When Onwuegbuchunam resisted and raised the alarm, Ezike and his gang members pushed him out of the tricycle, which was moving at high speed near Abidi Hall, Umuoji, where Umuoji Vigilante operatives were stationed.

The vigilante operatives, it was also gathered, gave the “one-chance” robbery syndicate a chase, leading to Ezike abandoning the tricycle and fleeing with the others, only to return the next day to the scene where he had abandoned the tricycle, and was subsequently arrested by the vigilante operatives, who later handed him over to the police, where he confessed to the crime.

Onwuegbuchunam, who sustained fatal injuries, died two days later.

# What began as a night of football excitement ended in sorrow Umudieleke Umuoru Village, Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, as family members, friends, neighbours and sympathizers gathered on Sunday to bid a
final farewell to Mazi Chibuzor Nzediegwu, a popular livestock trader who reportedly died while watching the UEFA Champions League final between Arsenal FC and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

The deceased, who reportedly suffered a heart attack while beholding the proceedings and the outcome of the highly-anticipated match, was said to have been laid to rest at his hometown amid tears and emotional scenes.

Reports indicate that the Nzediegwu, a well-known poultry and livestock dealer at Orie Uga Market and a die-hard fan of Arsenal Football Club, was among football enthusiasts who gathered at a viewing centre in Uga to watch the Champions League final on Saturday evening.

Sources familiar with the incident, however, said he suddenly slumped as PSG equalized with Arsenal during the second half of the match, as tension heightened in the encounter. Although, it was gathered that he was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, reports say efforts by health workers to revive him proved unsuccessful, as he was later confirmed dead.

# The Anambra State Government has restated its policy on graduation ceremonies in schools, clarifying that while graduation events remain permitted, extravagant celebrations and compulsory financial levies on parents are prohibited.

The clarification follows public concerns and reports of confusion over the government’s directive prohibiting lavish graduation parties in both primary and secondary schools across the state.

Speaking on the issue, the Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Education, Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu said the policy was introduced to reduce unnecessary financial pressure on parents and restore simplicity to school ceremonies.

Agbaizu explained that the government was not abolishing graduation celebrations, but was regulating their conduct to ensure affordability and fairness.

She further clarified that graduation party fees should only apply to bona fide graduands in Primary Six and Senior Secondary School 3 levels, adding that no pupil or student outside these classes should be made to pay any form of graduation levy.

According to her, schools are also prohibited from compelling parents to purchase expensive graduation gowns, customized outfits, or related materials as a condition for participation in ceremonies.

# Two officers were killed on Sunday night when gunmen ambushed a police patrol team along the Awa-Ndiukwuenu-Ufuma Road in Anambra State.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants opened fire on the officers, leaving two of them dead at the scene.

A commercial tricycle operator who claimed to have witnessed the incident said he was travelling along the road when he suddenly heard gunshots ahead.

According to him, he abandoned his tricycle and ran into a nearby bush for safety

“After some time, I returned, picked up my tricycle and continued my journey.

“When I got to the scene, I saw two policemen lying on the road and a police vehicle parked by the roadside,” he said in a voice note.

The witness said he decided to alert the public because he believed one of the officers might still have been alive and could require urgent assistance.

Confirming the incident, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP. Ikioye Orutugu, said the officers were attacked while returning from an assignment.

The CP noted that the command had commenced investigations into the attack and intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The commissioner added that he would visit the scene of the incident to assess the situation and work with security personnel on measures to forestall similar attacks in the state.

Orutugu also advised motorists and residents to exercise caution and avoid unauthorised checkpoints not manned by identifiable police personnel and official police vehicles.
