Kwankwaso Dismisses Rumours of NDC Exit, Hosts Strategy Meeting

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has downplayed reports that he threatened to quit the party over disagreements on candidate selection in Kano State.

In his first public comments on the matter, Kwankwaso took to X on Monday night to highlight ongoing party activities rather than address the speculation directly.

“This evening, I hosted a highly productive meeting with the NDC candidates from Kogi State at my residence in Abuja. We had robust deliberations on the way forward and concrete strategies for our collective victory,” he stated.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement also rejected the reports as “mere rumours.”

Spokesman Habibu Sale Mohammed said neither the movement nor its leader had expressed any intention to leave the party.

“The Kwankwasiyya Movement, and neither its leader, is complaining,” Mohammed stated. He noted that the party’s primaries on May 29 complied with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines, with consensus candidates adopted smoothly.

The rumours emerged after the Kano State NDC chapter adjusted its candidate list to enforce a 60/40 power-sharing formula between the Kwankwasiyya bloc and the party’s original structure. The changes affected several federal and state assembly tickets.

The development comes weeks after Kwankwaso and presidential candidate Peter Obi joined the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
