# The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into suspected child trafficking after rescuing a woman accused of posing as a nurse to secretly film newborn babies at a hospital in Obosi.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Anurika Nweme, was rescued from an angry mob after she allegedly gained access to Divine Mercy Hospital disguised as a nurse and secretly recorded newborns in the maternity ward.
Ikenga noted that hospital management confirmed the suspect was not a staff member after she claimed to be an employee when questioned.
He added that the suspect is in protective custody and assisting police with investigations to identify other persons who may be connected to the alleged child trafficking network.
# The Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake, represented Governor Chukwuma Soludo, at the Headquarters of Awka South Local Government Area for the official flag-off of the distribution of 4,000 food baskets donated by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief).
The food baskets were donated by KSrelief, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to the Government of Anambra State as part of humanitarian efforts aimed at providing succour to residents affected by various disasters across the State.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Soludo, Mrs. Nnake expressed appreciation to KSrelief and the Government of Saudi Arabia for their generosity and commitment to supporting vulnerable communities. She noted that the intervention would go a long way in alleviating the hardships faced by affected families and reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of its citizens.
# Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, Franklin Ikechukwu Nwadialo, has been sentenced to five years in a United States prison for masterminding a romance scam that defrauded victims of about $3.5 million.
Nwadialo, 42, was arrested by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at a Texas airport after arriving in the United States in 2024.
The Ogbaru council boss, who was elected chairman on September 28, 2024, was sentenced on Monday by the U.S. District Court in Tacoma, Washington.
The sentencing was announced by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd in a statement issued by the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
According to prosecutors, Nwadialo was indicted in December 2023 on 14 counts of wire fraud linked to an elaborate online romance scam that targeted at least eight victims.
At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Tiffany M. Cartwright described the crime as “devastating,” saying it ruined not only the victims’ finances but also caused emotional trauma, including shame, depression and isolation.

# Residents of Awka-Etiti in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State are calling for urgent government intervention as severe flooding continues to wreak havoc on homes, farmlands, and public infrastructure following days of heavy rainfall.
The flooding, which has severely affected the IKB Junction axis and surrounding neighbourhoods, has submerged residential buildings, destroyed crops, and disrupted movement, leaving many families counting their losses as the rainy season intensifies.
Concerned by the worsening situation, the Chairman of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Amaka Obi, drew the attention of the Anambra State Government to the recurring flood menace and appealed for immediate intervention to protect lives and property.
In response, the state government deployed the Director of Works, Engr. Harold Eze, to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas.
During the inspection, officials examined existing drainage infrastructure and evaluated the extent of damage caused by the flooding.

In the viral footage, the man repeatedly denies the allegation and insists he is innocent. He challenges those accusing him to review and release the CCTV footage from the property where the alleged theft reportedly occurred, saying it would reveal what truly happened.
The incident has raised serious concerns about mob justice, due process, and the dangers of punishing someone before the facts have been established. Many have questioned why the CCTV footage has not been made public if cameras were operational.

# The Anambra State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation into an alleged child trafficking case following the rescue of a 37-year-old woman, identified as Anurika Nweme, from an angry mob by officers attached to the Awada Divisional Headquarters.
According to a statement issued by the command, the incident occurred on June 23, at Divine Mercy Hospital along Eze Iweka Road, Awada, Obosi. Reports indicate that the suspect allegedly gained access to the hospital’s maternity ward while dressed in clothing resembling a nurse’s uniform and was later observed secretly recording videos of newborn babies.
Hospital staff and concerned members of the public reportedly confronted the woman after noticing her activities. During questioning, she allegedly claimed to be a staff member of the hospital. However, hospital management subsequently verified that her name did not appear on the institution’s staff register.
The situation quickly degenerated as a crowd gathered and attempted to assault the suspect. Police operatives responded promptly, rescued her from the mob, and took her into protective custody to prevent any act of mob justice.
The command disclosed that the suspect is currently assisting investigators with useful information that may help uncover other individuals allegedly connected to the suspected trafficking operation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu assured residents that a thorough investigation is underway and pledged that the public would be kept informed of significant developments as the inquiry progresses.
The command also called on hospitals and other healthcare facilities across the state to strengthen security measures, including staff identification and access control procedures, to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As part of activities marking this year’s World Drug Day, with the theme, “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Anambra State Command, carried out a sensitization campaign against illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse on the streets of Awka.
The NDLEA, accompanied during the road walk by sister agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), marched from its corporate headquarters at Udoka Estate, Awka, through Kwata Junction, UNIZIK Junction, Eke Awka Roundabout, and Ogbolu to Kwata Market before returning to base, having enlightened members of the public on the need to embrace a drug-free lifestyle and avoid the harmful consequences of drug abuse.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, the Commander of the NDLEA in Anambra State, Commander of Narcotics Charles Onubogu, explained that the road walk was aimed at reminding the public that drug abuse destroys lives, ruins destinies, and can lead to death, and appealed to stakeholders to partner with the agency in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse, noting that the NDLEA cannot achieve a drug-free society alone.
Also speaking, Mr. Bob-Manuel Udokwu, commended the NDLEA for embarking on the awareness campaign, which he said would have a positive impact on public consciousness, and urged young people to stay away from hard drugs in order to achieve their dreams and attain greatness in life.
# The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed as false a security alert circulating on social media alleging that a military helicopter dropped unidentified items in a bush located along the boundary between Nimo and Adazi-Nnukwu communities in Anaocha Local Government Area.
In response to the report on June 25, the command promptly deployed security operatives to the area to verify the claim and assess the situation. Preliminary findings showed that the location remains peaceful, with no suspicious objects or security threats discovered during the operation.
According to the Police, normal activities are continuing uninterrupted within and around the area, while security personnel have sustained routine surveillance measures to ensure public safety and maintain confidence in the state’s security framework.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, called on residents to disregard the unfounded report and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic and undermining public confidence in security agencies.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to proactive policing, intelligence-driven operations, and effective collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders in the collective effort to maintain peace and security across the state.
# The member representing Ihiala federal constituency of Anambra State at the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Paschal Arinzechukwu Agbodike and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance for the national assembly elections, has hinted that he would empower not less than 500 youths of Ihiala Local Government Area with federal jobs in his second term.
Agbodike who gave the hint at the APGA regional headquarters Awka shortly after receiving his certificate of return, said his second term at the national assembly would be 60% human capital development and 40% physical infrastructure such that youths of Ihiala federal constituency would be given priority attention, adding that at the end of his tenure no Ihiala youth would be jobless.
He explained that the aim of his emphasis on youths was to empower them with jobs from federal government agencies and establishments so they would inturn replicate same in their respective families and beyond inorder to break the chain of poverty and joblessness in the area.
Agbodike whose completed and ongoing projects and programmes adorned the nooks and crannies of Ihiala Local Government Area, maintained that his first term at the National Assembly was a tip of the iceberg because his second term would spring bigger surprises for his constituents.
