Barcelona have contacted the representatives of Manchester City midfielder Rodri in a late attempt to hijack Real Madrid’s pursuit of the Spain international.
According to talkSPORT, the Catalan club have entered the race for the 30-year-old, who has one year remaining on his contract at the Premier League champions.
RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins reported in July that Real Madrid had reached a verbal agreement with the 2026 World Cup-winning captain and Ballon d’Or winner.
Barcelona’s interest has intensified after Frenkie de Jong suffered a knee injury during the World Cup that could sideline him for the rest of 2026.
From the club’s perspective, Rodri would fill a void left since Sergio Busquets departed. His tactical discipline, physical presence and ball-retention ability are viewed as key assets for coach Hansi Flick’s Champions League ambitions.
Rodri’s family origins in Madrid mean he is understood to favour a return to his hometown. While Real Madrid remain favourites, Barcelona’s late intervention means the contest for the midfielder is far from settled.
