Argentina forward Julian Alvarez has publicly called for a transfer away from Atletico Madrid, declaring it the best move for his future just moments after helping his country advance in the World Cup.
The 26-year-old, who came off the bench in Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Austria, made the surprise announcement in post-match comments to the media on Monday.
“I want to fulfill my dream. I have spoken with the people at the club that I needed to speak to. The best thing for my future is a transfer,” Alvarez said.
He added that he could not hide his intentions and was trying to be honest with everyone involved.
Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 for around £82 million and scored 20 goals across all competitions last season. However, he has been linked with a move to Barcelona, where reports suggest he has already agreed personal terms on a five-year deal.
Barcelona reportedly had an £86 million offer rejected by Atletico, who are holding out for more than the £104 million they received for Antoine Griezmann’s sale to the Catalan club in 2019.
The Spanish champions have been active in the transfer market this summer, signing Anthony Gordon for £70 million, and remain interested in other attacking options.
Real Madrid had previously seen a £130 million bid for the player turned down.
Alvarez enjoyed significant success at Manchester City, contributing to a treble-winning campaign after arriving from River Plate for just £14 million in 2022. He also won the World Cup with Argentina that same year.
